ACTIUNILE INFORMATIV-OPERATIVE DIN PENITENCIARELE comuniste. detentia lui ALEXANDRU TODEA ÍN PENITENCIARUL DE LA DEJ CÄLIN FLOREA The informatory-operative actions in the communist prisons. Alexandru Todea’s detention in the penitentiary from Dej (Summary) On the 18th of January, 1952, the sub-lieutenant Cisteianu Gheorghe from the General Direction of State Security, Mure§ area, composed an ample account-synthesis about the activity developed by a 19-person- group, members of the “Catholic antirevolutionary organization of secret service in favor of the Western imperialist powers". The account condenses briefly the activity developed by those persons. The sublieutenant’s conclusions are based on an intense activity of supervision and investigation developed over about 2 years. The organization was active for a short period of time but as resulting from the inquiry it was an extremely dynamical one. It was struck off at the beginning of 1951 after the apprehension of the bishop Todea together with Gutiu Gheorghe, one of the former’s “main curriers". The long inquiry subsequent to their apprehension and the data gathered up by the local workers of Security permit recomposing the structure and its activity on the beam of resistance. After the investigations made by the Security, they concluded that the organization was structured on elitist groups, parishes, and archpriest rank sectors. It was abolished during the year 1951. Nevertheless, the Greek-Catholic clandestine activity continued, which is proved by the numerous notes of Security and Cult Department regarding this aspect. In 1955 most of the Greek-Catholic clergy’s incarceration involved in the activity of the „Clandestine Vicarage” was ended, continuing with their amnesty based on the provisions of the Decree 421/1955. Remains of the ancient behaviors found their way being resuscitated especially by the events of Hungary and Poland. Only at the beginning of the years ’60 they will suffer an improvement. In all this time the top of the opposition lasted quartered in the communist prisons. The paranoia that accompanied the competition for maintaining Gheorghiu-Dej on top, together with the revolutionary evolutions of the communist mass, became concrete in a careful monitoring of the population’s political behavior and of the possibility that this express the gratitude barely. It was reflected in the behavior of the political prisoners, the measure of incarceration being considered vulnerable related to their isolation from society. At the beginning of the years ’60 this monitoring is still present in the Romanian prisons. The clandestine bishop Alexandru Todea, for instance, represented the subject of an investigation of this kind achieved in the prison of Dej over the years 1961-1962. The causes that determined it are represented by the discreditable information about “the hostile activity related to the ex - Greek-Catholic cult, of maintaining the ideology among the other ex - priests and of converting other prisoners to Catholicism”. At the same time, the bishop was signalized for “the nationalist and supporting activity of the ex- P.N.T.”, reason that determined evidencing him as “Greek-Catholic top element with activity in 345
