Ioan Eugen Man: Vechi biserici de lemn din judeţul Mureş dispărute în ultimele decenii

44 lOAN EUGEN MAN OLD WOODEN CHURCHES IN MURE§ COUNTY THAT HAD BEEN LOST DURING THE PAST DECADES- Summary -Having a secular evolution, wooden churches originate from peasant architecture, namely the wooden peasant houses which were the image of the deepest realities of spiritual life of Romanian people. There have been numerous wooden churches in Transylvania for centuries and until modern ages, owing to poplitical and social circumstances of Romanians on this land. However, it is impossible to tell their number along the centuries. In any case, Mure§ county has had numerous wooden churches and monasteries and losses have been more severe compared to other counties: 154 churches and 25 monasteries and hermitages. There were still 70 wooden churches in 1985-1987, all of them either monuments or historical and architectural valuables. Thanks to researchers’ writings, especially Atanasie Popa’s, certain churches have been presented to us as testimonials of the Romanians’ existence and culture, like the ones at Corne§ti, lernut, Atinti§, Ludu§, Cucerdea etc.. On the other hand, we have no other information, except for historical data, about the churches that have disappeared, because the communities they had belonged to had long forgotten them. In the past three decades many other churches have disappeared on account of varied reasons and circumstances. This is why in order to preserve them, as long as possible, they are presented here both by means of description or images that have been preserved.
