The Icons on Glass from Mure§ County II BY VALÉR POP- summary -One of the well-known painters on glass was Popa Sandu (or Sandu Dascälu, Pop Alexandru) from lernuteni, in Mure§ County. He mostly painted portraits, such as: the Mother of God Hodighitria, Pantocrator Jesus, Saint Nicholas, Michael and Gabriel Archangels. The compositions of these icons are central, monumental and balanced ones, having an in- equilibrium distribution of the painted surfaces over the whole surface. The beauty of the paintings consists in: the firm and fine drawing, the natural and expressive physiognomies (even charming), the usage of some vivid colours, harmoniously combined with the brilliant gold fund. Moreover, these characteristics also underline the painter’s experience, trained hand and the perfect sense of colour.
