THE ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM, A REAL MONUMENT OF THE BAROQUE STYLE IN TIRGU-MURE§ In the city of TTrgu-Mure§, at the north side of the square of Roses nr. 11, is placed one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in the town, todey hosting the Ethnographic Museum. In Tirgu-Mure§„ the baroque style appeared around the year 1640, the first building in this style being the house at Bolyai Street nr. 12. But the real value of the baroque style became evident during the middle of the XVIII th century with the construction of the Toldalagi palace. Created by the count Toldalagi László (1717-1779) the building is one of the classic courthouses from Transilvania, receiving an official appreciation from the royal Vienna Court. As an expert of the baroque style, count Toldalagi appealed to foreign craftsmen like so many nobels of thet time. So the designer and the coordonatot of the condtruction was the French arhitect Jean Louis D Orr, but the real construction of the building was done by Paul Schmidt, and the sculptures were created by the wellknown Schuchbauer Anton. The building was built in two parts. In the first part (1759-1762) the building had an U-shaped form, a characteristic of the baroque arhitecture from Transilvania. In the second pat Paul Schmidt received the asseignment to build the forth side of the building. Structuraly the building includes a basement, a ground floor, a first floor, an interior yar of 5,29x8,25 m the exterior dimensions being 18,60x35,90 m. Through its proportion, arhitectural forms and sculptural elements the building bears the characteristic lines of the late baroque period-rococo-with evident French influence. These elements place it in the first line of the baroque houses of Transilvania. For all of these reasons the building hosts the collection of the Ethnographic Museum of TTrgu-Mure§.
