CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE POLITICAL AND CULTURAL LIFE OF THE ROMANIANS FROM SIGHISOARA IN THE MODERN AGE (1849-1914) (Summary) By using various documentary sources, the autor presents aspects from the political and cultural life or Romanians from Sighi?oara, beginning with the second half of the XIX-th century until the break of the First World War, in a period in wich the town is generally characterized by its development. There is evoked the participation of the most remarkable representatives from Sighisoara at the general conferences of the National Romanian Party, the attitude of the Romanians from Sighisoara towards elections, their solidarity with the roumanian War for Independence, the echo of the movement of Memorandum, the working-class struggle, the1 foundation of the romanian section of the Social-Democrat Party. There is also presented the cultural life of the Romanians from Sighisoara, the spreading of reading, the progress of school, the local filial activity of Astra, the theatrical-artistical movement. On the whole, it is a period characterized byi achievements, by the development of the consciousness of national unity and. its preparation for the Union of Transylvania with Romania. 83 Gr.
