Bette Johnson was a great member of our Hungarian community. She was a career educator and devotee of music, the performing arts, history, travel and foreign languages and cultures. After graduating from college, she resided with her family in Berlin, Germany, Washington, D.C., and Geneva, Switzerland. She earned advanced degrees in teaching, administration and French. She taught French and served as assistant principal in public schools in our area. She was involved in cultural, music and community activities. She participated in Alliance Francaise, International Foreign Language Society, American Hungarian Heritage Association (A.H.H.A.). She served on the boards of many musical groups. For us Hungarians we would like to mention Bette Standish Johnson’s activities in the American Hungarian Heritage Association. At the time as part of the Halsey International Scholarship Program the A.H.H.A. sponsored several post grad-Wishes for Easter Father Emeric Szlezák, retired from St Emery’s, sent this in a greeting card: I am quite organized by now in Sunny Florida. It is not easy to be uprooted after 19 years in one place, but what has to be has to be. For me it is like starting all over again. There is a large group of Hungarians down here, both on the east and the west side of Florida, and if they want to to go to Hungarian services they are no more then an hour, or a half away. I have a Hungarian service in Sarasota every month with 150 attendance. It means driving 50 miles there and the same back. In fact I knew some couples when I married them forty or more years ago, or baptized their grandchildren. So it is a small world. At 881 am the oldest in the Friary, and the nurse says the healthiest. I hope it stays that way. Best wishes for a grace füled Easter. Bette was the president of the Mary Katona Scholarship Fund. When we started the Magyar News 17 years ago she joined us in the editorial work. When the Halsey Program ended, A.H.H.A. as a separate organization was sponsoring local students of Hungarian background and community participation, in higher education. For the past years Bette Johnson’s health prevented her from further work, so she retired. We missed all the participation she had in the community. We missed her personality, and we missed her contribution to the Magyar News. We are saddened by her passing. We will keep her in our memories and our hearts always. Joseph F.
