The Calvin United Church of Christ in Faifield, CT was füled to capacity. At this time of the performance the singers were performing classical pieces. Following the performance in the church the audience stepped over to the newly restored hall of the Calvin Church for dinner Standing in dark suit is Rev. Bela Poznan, pastor. To have the performance in the church underlined the spirit of the singing. It wasn’t just the songs, the music and the words. Gabriella added more to it. Her appearance, the way she looked already lifted the songs to a higher, more attractive level. Then her voice coming through clean, floating through the air. No efforts, no speculative effects, it was just spiritual, coming from heaven. All this was supported with the love for music, and a fine, constant smile. After the church everybody stepped over to the newly renovated hall to have a real Hungarian dinner that was cooked by Marika Varga. It was Hungarian from start to finish. After the goodies for the body, the songs of the soul opened up. Familiar melodies like Mond meg, hogy imádom; Ma Önről álmodtam megint; Emlékszel még; Hej cigány, Te rongyos élet; Egy a szívem, egy a párom, and so on. I happened to notice that there were some people who have trouble using the Hungarian language but they managed to sing along. The whole evening was a bundle of joy. I would like to write about Bela Czikany. Unfortunately I couldn’t gather enough information on him besides being tenor at the Operetta Theater in Budapest. He fit together with Gabriella, having a beautiful voice and a very handsome appearance. We know, in our area, more about a newcomer, whom we have never seen singing in public. He is a young man, Oliver Valu, who participates in Hungarian events, does much work in the Pannónia Club, the Magyar Studies of America, and the Committee to erect a decent monument in Hungary in memory of 1956. This time he sang a few songs , his baritone voice immediately captured the audience, and everybody who knew his was amazed of his talent. For this lovely evening we say thanks to Agnes Szlovencsák who was untiringly organizing it. Also our appreciation goes to the Calvin United Church of Christ, and the pastor, Rev. Béla Poznan, for opening up their doors. We hope to see all the participants as soon as possible. Joseph F. Balogh On the left: Gabriella is singing favorite songs after dinner was over. Many of the diners joined singing along. On the right above, Oliver Valu is holding on to the microphone. This probably was his debut because we never heard him sing before. With his trained baritone voice, he amazed the audience and received a well deserved applaud. The cooking of delicious Hungarian food was being done by Marika Varga with Kristy Csati helping in. T
