DO WE NEED EDUCATION? Since September 1 there have been 218 kindergartens and schools closed nationwide in Hungary. The Democratic Union of Teachers claims that about six thousand teachers have lost their jobs since September. The trade union says that many teachers’ salaries have not risen in spite of wageincreases as the institutions maintaining schools reduced the different allowances. The Ministry of Education refutes the allegations of the trade union. The Democratic Union of Teachers sent questionnaires to the maintainers of the schools and the result is that about six thousand people have been dismissed. The Ministry claims the survey has not been representative as only a quarter of the institutions gave answers to the questions and at the moment they have no reliable data yet about the exact number of dismissed teachers. László Sió, head of the section of educational policy of Fidesz claims there have been 218 kindergartens and schools closed down in Hungary, mainly in Northern Hungary and in the Alföld region. The government plans to introduce further restrictions next year as the normative state subsidies will be halved for villages with a population less than 1100 while in the case of settlements with a population of 3000- 3500 no subsidies will be paid at all. Translated by Péter Szentmihályi Szabó Magyar Nemzet Online A FEW LINES FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES The people of a big country wasn’t smart enough to realize what now they are seriously talking about. In due time they should had avoided the massacre of their own people and the massacre and misery of the Hungarian people. These lines are from the New York Times. It reminds us of how stupid mankind could be. “Time has been unkind to Lenin, whose remains here in Red Square are said to sprout occasional fungi, and whose ideology and party long ago fell to ruins. Now the inevitable question has returned. Should his body be moved?..... Revisiting a proposal that thwarted Boris N. Yeltsin, who faced down tanks but in his time as president could not persuade Russians to remove the Soviet Union's founder from his place of honor, a senior aide to President Vladimir V. Putin raised the matter last week, saying it was time to bury the man.... Depending on who is speaking about Lenin now, he is either a hero or a beast, a gifted revolutionary or a syphilitic mass murderer..... Some describe an opportunist who ushered vicious cronies to power, resulting in a totalitarian police state. "It is time to get rid of this horrible mummy," said Valeriya Novodvorskaya, head of the Democratic Union, a small reform party. "One cannot talk about any kind of democracy or civilization in Russia when Lenin is still in the country's main square. She added: "I would not care even if he were thrown on a garbage heap." Thanks. Beszélek Magyarul The translation of this headline is: “I speak Hungarian”. Try to imagine, somebody who only speaks Hungarian, walking around in America. Never went to ‘English as a Second Language’ class. Doesn’t have a Hungarian-English dictionary at hand, and is in an open strange world. Nobody around to interpret. You might say totally lost. This happened in New Hampshire. One day the door was left open and outflew “Pityuka”, taking only the feathers on his back. He was a blue parakette, a very loved pet of an elderly Hungarian lady. We are very sorry and we hope that they will find the bird.
