On the 50th Anniversary of October 23,1956 TO THE HUNGARIANS OF THE WORLD Dear Fellow Countrymen, Dear Hungarian Friends: In our previous circulars we have given an account of our plans launched last fall concerning the creation of a commemorative statue to be erected and unveiled in Hungary on the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the Hungarian Freedomfight. The statue will be the gift to the Old Country by Hungarians living abroad. Since our last circular, Dr. Ferenc Mádl, the President of the Hungarian Republic, during a personal - audience, has given his undivided attention to our plans, and has even augmented his encouragement in a follow-up letter: "I hope with all my heart that your endeavors will meet with success. I wish you strength and patience, for although I can see that your enthusiasm and your willingness to sacrifice for the sake of this cause is unbounded, I know that the biggest obstacle is still ahead of you - namely, the acquisition of the necessary financial backing. I wish you all the best in your campaign for contributions." In accord with the written instruction from the head mayor of Budapest, we have - also in person - submitted to the "Budapest Galéria" small-scale models prepared by three sculptors. We have suffered considerable setbacks by the fact that the jury of the "Galéria" refused all three applications, so that we needed to be forthcoming with new ones. The image of the statue to be created (by a sculptor in Hungary, who has over 100 statues located at several places in Budapest) is shown above. The complete cost will exceed $220,000 which we have to pay in 3 installments. Our voluntary nonprofit organization will assume the entire procedure of the planning of this enterprise, along with all the necessary negotiations and the steps leading to the implementation of the whole. However, in the absence of the necessary financial base, it is incumbent upon us to turn to the Hungarians of the world in order to acquire the needed funds. IN THE NAME OF OUR LOVE OF THE OLD COUNTRY WE IMPLORE OUR FELLOW COUNPage 2 TRYMEN AND OUR FRIENDS (ALL ACCORDING TO THEIR MEANS) TO SEND CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THIS CAUSE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE REALIZATION OF THIS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT SOLEMN MANIFESTATION OF OUR UNDYING LOYALTY. The Magyar Studies of America, Inc. will acknowledge all donations. All of our financial dealings are always open for inspection. Cancelled checks will substantiate all the contributions, and in case of other transfers of money and/or cash advances we will send written receipts to all concerned. Contributions are tax-deductible in accordance with resolution #79-2319 issued on December 6, 1979, by the US Department of Treasury (the laws concerning charitable contributions in countries other than the USA are, unfortunately, not at our disposal). All donations should be sent to an account especially established for this purpose. Checks to be payable to: Magyar Studies of America, Inc. Write 1956 Memorial Fund on the Memo line. Address: 242 Kings Hwy Cut-off Fairfield, CT 06824-5394 (USA) Inspired by the Spirit of 1956, we implore our Fellow Countrymen and Friends to extend to us their ASSISTANCE so that this reverential homage to the heroes who fought for the liberation of our beloved Hungary may become a worthy memorial. The stone and bronze statue will be about 24’ tall; the picture of its not quite elaborated model is shown above. We wish to bring to the attention of all organizations ana individuals that at the unveiling of the statue we’ll also publicize the names (and send copies to the authorities) of all contributors in a suitable commemorative volume. In addition, the list of the major donations will be engraved at the monument as well. THOSE WHO DONATE $10,000 OR MORE WILL BE REWARDED WITH A TRUE, MADE TO SCALE (approx. 20" tall) CAST BRONZE REPLICA OF THE STATUE. For the sake of truth we must advise you that 1 " years AFTER we started our project, the current prime minister of Hungary has issued a request a few days ago for bids to erect a ' central" 1956-monument. He allocated about 4 million dollars for his project... The sacrifice by the Hungarians living abroad may seem modest comparing with the financial might of the rulers, nonetheless, OUR freedomfighter background and spirit is indisputable. We remain sincerely yours in the hope of your understanding, encouragement and financial assistance.
