New election in Hungary Who will be the next President? The present term ends August 3, and the next president has to be elected 30 days before PRESIDENTS OF THE REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY Mátyás Szűrös Temporary President,. October 23, 1989 - May 1990. Ferenc Mádl President August 4, 2000 -The new President of the Republic of Hungary will be elected June 6, 2005 Names of those who emerged to be voted on: Ferenc Madl present President, Gyula Horn past Prime Minister, Ferenc Glatz past president of the Hungarian Scientific Academy, Csaba Gombár, László Solyom, Katalin Szili President of the Parliament, and Peter Barandy past Minister of Justice. The World Federation of Hungarians suggested Sándor Racz. Katalin Szili seems to be the front runner. About Katalin Szili She was bom in Barcs (Somogy Megye) in May 1956. As it was usual in the following years, the schools didn’t give a proper information about 1956. As we know it was very distorted in favor of the Communists, the Uprising was considered counter revolution. She grew up in that environment for almost four decades. Her higher education took place in Pécs at the Janus Pannonius University. She graduated with a major in Law, later added on political science. From 1992 to 1994 Szili is a representative of the Council of the city Pecs. In 1994 she was elected member of the Parliament. For four years she became political under secretary of the Environmental and Watersupervisory Ministerium. Following for four years till 2002 vice president of the Hungarian Parliament, and later President of the Parliament. The political affiliation of Katalin Szili was the MSZP from 1983. In 2000 she became vice president of the party, also for two years she was the president of the Women Fraction. At the congress of the party in 2004 Katalin Szili resigned from all positions she held in the party. She is considered for the post of President. The Prime Minister Gyurcsany did not support this decision, what is a very good point for Szili, but the MSZP voted for here. Katalin Szili is well educated, very smart, has hands-on experience in government matters. By age, she is young enough to take on heavy work. At the end of the term she probably be suitable for an other term. A few lines on some of the other nominations mentioned. Ferenc Glatz who was 79 votes behind Szili, is an outstanding historian. Numerous publications and books, professor at the University, Cultural Minister, and from 1996 President of the Hungarian Scientific Academy. In between a long list of scientific activity could be going on and on. Péter Bárándy, lawyer, highly quali- ’ fied legal expert. Minister of Justice. He was well known for supporting the poor people. He was the first person who said that he will not serve in the Gyurcsany government. He said that first he wants to see who are going to be members of the government, and because the members should work tightly, it matters who these persons are. Peter Barandy Csaba Gombár Csaba Gombár ,Hungary's most prominent social scientists examine the meaning and practice of sovereignty from the perspectives of international law, history, economics, sociology, and political science. He worked out the Constitution for a Hungarian Democracy László Sólyom As the President of the Hungarian Constitution Court László Sólyom was able to present his fantastic knowledge about law that could form and give stability to the country. Besides his devotion to Hungary puts hin in a category of persons who are László Solyom suitable to be elected as President of The Republic of Hungary. Sándor Rácz The World Federation of Hungarians brought Sándor Rácz into the lime light. His life story is very different to the others. He isn’t stacked with diploma’s or works done in the government. Rácz was a village boy who risked his life saving cattle for the village when the Germans were to Sándor Rácz drive them away. He saw first hand the brutality, the raping by the Soviet soldiers. At the age of 23 he was the head of the Workers Union in the factory and elected to the Workers Central Committee of Greater Budapest. He fought against the Soviet and stopped the deportation of the Hungarian Youths. In a long story just mentioning that he was arrested several times, fought in 1956. He visited the USA twice, and gave talks in several countries. He was honorary President of the Hungarian World Federation. He is an outstanding citizen of Hungary. Our information is limited.
