HAIL. TO THE REDS A SAD STAGE OIV REMEMBERING OCTOBER 23, 1956 I am still gasping for air. I don’t mean fresh air, just air. It was knocked out of me when I saw some pictures. These photos were taken at the StatuePark not far from Budapest where the bulk of the 1956 Uprising took place. So what is there to see in the mentioned park? The cover of the booklet they hand out does the proper spelling; “Gigantic Monuments from the Age of Communist Dictatorship”. 41 of them. To round it out they brought into the park Osztapenko, also the Bulgarian Dimitrov. Stalin and Rákosi were left out. Somebody had some normal sense. Before I continue, I would like to make a few good remarks. The design of the artistic field, also the architecture of the adjoining buildings are excellent. The statues are of good artistic quality, some could be referred to as masterpieces, disregarding the content, and the onlooker makes no mistake of the subject matter. It is a strong demonstration in favor of the Communist Dictatorship. There is an other point I would like to bring out. Putting an end to the German- Nazi occupation, and Nazism as such, the Soviet and American forces are to be praised. Somebody like Osztapenko, who lost his life trying to have the Germans in Hungary surrender, should be honored. But. It wasn’t figured out that time what was lying ahead. Unfortunately the Nazi Dictatorship was replaced by the Soviet, Communist Bloody Dictatorship. We honor those American and Soviet soldiers who stopped the Nazis. We also honor those Hungarians, old or young, who realized the oppression of the Hungarian people and risking their life stood up against it. Many of us who were participants, or witnesses, in the October 23,1956 uprising know very well that it wasn’t just the marching to the Bem Apó Square, the Parliament, and the Radio, or cutting the symbol of ideology and ruling power out of the flag, leaving the red-white-andgreen with a hole in the middle of it. There was precious blood that went with it. On the right, a plaque on one of the buildings lists heroes of the Corvin köz, also noting those who were executed by the Communists. On the left a Soviet solder holding the victory flag. People standing next to it give an idea of the size. Below is the StatuePark. The arrow points to the monument we show on the left. In total there are 41 monuments. Massacre would be the proper word to cover it. The Soviet tanks had the order to shoot when a group of people were in sight. I was going to the Bread Factory in Budapest with some buddies to pick up a few sacks of bread set aside for the warriors. We had the factory already in sight Page 1 i
