May 1,2005 Dear Parishioners, I have received a letter of obedience from the Provincial of the Province of the Most Holy Name, in New York, which had prepared me for the Franciscan Priesthood, and of which I have always been a member. This coming summer, the beginning of August, I will be assigned to the Franciscan Friars and Community of St. Anthony in St. Petersburg, Florida. The community has two friars in their sixties, twelve in their seventies and one friar is ninety-four, who is also my classmate. Normally priests in administration resign from office when they reach the age of seventy-five, and Cardinals at eighty do not even have a active voice in voting for the Pope, the Bishop of Rome, and Successor of St. Peter. Since I shall be eighty-seven and a half this summer, I shall join their company. In all my sixty-one years in the Franciscan Priesthood, I felt being guided by the loving Providence of God. This Providence in my behalf began when my father came safely home after military service in the Austrian-Hungarian Army in World War One. During my childhood, I was spiritually supported by my mother who attended daily Mass and continued to pray for me after I left home. After ordination to the Priesthood in 1944, in Washington, D.C., I had to be dispensed from the fourth year of theology, as I was ordered to go to St. Stephen's of Hungary Parish in New York City to temporarily replace the Hungarian Friar who became sick. This assignment lasted forty-one years. When Father Dennis Szőcs died in 1985, Father Robert Németh asked me to help him at St. Emery s Parish, which at that time was under the jurisdiction of St. Stephen Custody, and eventually under the Province of the Immaculate Conception. When Feather Robert died, and Father Louis became pastor and superior, I continued the parochial service to our good people. Since I am long past the normal age of retirement, my Provincial has assigned me to join the Franciscan Community in St. Petersburg this summer. After quite twenty years of priestly service to the good people of St. Emery's who have been extremely good to me. I leave with a heavy heart and many thanks and the assurance of remembering you at the Altar of God when I hold in my consecrated hands the Precious Body and Blood of our Savior. May the Good Lord Bless You All and Give You His Peace! Gratefully yours, Rev. Emeric Szlezak P.S. The Lord willing, my new address after August will be: Rev. Emeric Szlezak, O.F .M. St. Anthony Friary 357 Second Street North St. Petersburg, Florida 33701-2941 Somebody didn’t pass the test In the Hungarian educational system one may graduate from high school, but to go to higher education one has to pass an other test. Probably we call it Regent’s Test. In Hungarian “érettségi”. This year the tests were somehow placed on the internet, available to the public before the actual test took place. Now everybody is blaming somebody else, and they don’t seem to find the culprit. Now do the students have to take the test again with different questions? Somehow this problem fits in with the many others that the government puts in front of us. Placing the ideology aside, the Hungarian education prepared all students on their level of studies with good results. Many of them have proved that their studies were not in vain. So what’s up? We are happy to extend our invitation to all who love good food, fun company and raffle.
