Middle East in Budapest Hungary recently converted a synagogue that hasn’t been used for some time in downtown Budapest into the memorial centre in memory of more than 500,000 Hungarian Jews who perished during World War Two, during the Nazi rule and occupation. Before World War Two, Hungary had two larger size minority groups. One was the gypsy, or Roma, numbering around 700,000. The other was the Jewish minority of more than one million. This now numbers fewer than 100,000, but is still central Europe's biggest Jewish community-In May and June 1944, Hungarian authorities deported 437,402 Jews to concentration camps, according to German records. Hungarian police said that three Arab nationals were detained in Hungary. They had been planning to blow up Holocaust Museum in Budapest . "They were planning a bomb attack on the Holocaust Museum." A police official said that the planned attack might be linked to Israeli President Moshe Katsav's current visit to Budapest. Police described the three suspects as Arab nationals. One Palestinian, and two Syrians. Local television HirTV said house searches were under way at five different locations in Budapest in connection with the planned attack. A local news agency Havaria Press reported that foreign secret services had warned Hungarian authorities of a planned attack weeks before Katsav's visit. On the other hand an Israeli security source said they were not involved in the Hungarian investigation. The Hungarian Security Guards had rented a special bullet-proof Mercedes from Germany just for Katsav's visit. This had to be done because Hungary never thought that the Middle East will have any thing to do there. In March of this year the Hungarian National Security Office had learned that a Palestinian dentist with Hungarian citizenship had plans to blow up a Jewish museum in Budapest. Last year the 42-year-old Palestinian dentist appeared on Hungarian television where he gave his views of the conflict in the Far East. At the time he had said that the Iraqi war had not ended despite the Americans announcing it had. The dentist had allegedly also tried to convince two Hungarians to blow up the Jewish museum. These two men are also under preliminary arrest. Well nothing went wrong. The dedication of the Museum in memory of the Hungarian jews was done as planned, and President Moshe Katsav's current visit was up to standard.
