MÁRCIUS 15 A tribute to the 1848 Hungarian historical event. LAJOS KOSSUTH SÁNDOR PETŐFI It is the spirit of freedom that grew in the souls of the Hungarian people. They had faced so much oppression, decimated by bloody murderers of the Tartar mongols, then after centuries of building prosperity the Turks occupied the country with horrendous rule. That wasn’t all. The grip of Austria lead into modem times. The Hungarian’s search for freedom brought along the Revolution of March 15, 1848. The Hungarian soul blossomed out of this historical event. Not even the tragic destruction by the Trianon Treaty taking away three quarters of the land and two thirds of the population wasn’t able to do lasting damage. The Soviet with four decades of bmtal occupation tried to top it. This only made the Hungarian’s heart beat stronger and have the year 1956 show that the spirit of 1848 was nurtured through time and kept on demanding freedom for the Hungarian nation. All committed Hungarians in the wide world stop at March 15 to remember the heroic time and to enrich their desire to help freedom prevail, showing all peoples the road to it. The Pannónia American Hungarian Club with other Hungarian organizations, here in Connecticut, celebrates March 15 every year. They organize programs suitable for the event.
