Edit Lauer and Mr. Zsolt Szekeres of Washington- Budapest examined the challenges and possibilities of minority policy making in the Carpathian Basin. In his presentation, Mr. Miklós Csesznegi of Szeged outlined the difficulties and possibilities con­fronting the establishment of an organiza­tion similar to MBK, in Hungary. Ms. Rozália Kóka from Budapest-Bukovina gave an inspiring account of the history of the Székelys of Bukovina. She described the persistent difficulties related to the persecution of this national group; at the same time, she proudly described the accomplish­ments of survival. Ms. Eszter Szentkirályi Pigniczky of Cleveland, OH, gave a color­ful presentation describing a trip to Northern Hungary organized by the Magyar Regős (Minstrel) Scouts of Ohio. The cultural aspects of the Conference proved to be uhe exciting and of high qual­ity indeed. Ms Kóka gave a memorably fascinating, humorous account of the fabled stories and songs orig­inating from the folldore of the Bukovinian Hungarians. Ms. Ildikó Kozsik from Marosvásárhely (Tirgu- Mures) gave colorful presen­tation of the ballads examin­ing the female psyche, by the poet, János Arany. Ms. Eva Mécs of Pittsburgh, PA gave a highly charged and riveting literary presentation, entitled "The meaning of life." An excel­lent Hungarian folk ensemble ,the “Düvő” gave a enthusi­astically popular concert ,and continued to play music for us nightly, at times up to three o' clock in the morning. The traditional campfire and entertainment segment on Wednesday, August 20, gave an opportunity for the artists and the Düvő Ensemble to "shine" again. It was truly touching and stimulat­ing to observe and hear youngsters, ages 3 to 10, reciting poems in Hungarian, during their annual literary presentation. Nature walks were conducted, while the “specialty” groups, such as embroidery and folksinging proved to be very popular Ildikó Kozsik Rozália Kóka enjoying the canoe also. We had an opportunity to enjoy a video presentation of the famous “István a Király” (Stephen, the King) during an evening program. The newly organized MBK Bookclub analyzed and discussed Sándor Márai’s internationally popular novel "Embers" (A gyertyák csonkig égnek). For the first time in its existence, the ITT -OTT Conference had conducted a parallel program for English-speaking par­ticipants. Presentations related to the histo­ry of the Hungarian Community of Friends, history of Hungary, the place of Hungarian music on the palette of interna­tional musical life, discussion of current events affecting Hungarian minority life, cooking demonstration and recipe sharing took place also. The Annual General Assembly of MBK approved the establish­ment of the "Sándor Kiss Foundation" (Kiss Sándor Alapitvá.ny), to assist the educational endeavors of high school stu­dents in Transylvania and Trans-Carpathia. Istenszolgálat organized by the MBK' s Youth Group and closing remarks by the president concluded an electrifying,highly successful ITT-OTT Conference, on August 23 rd. Dr. Balázs B. Somogyi Hungarian Tapestry: Colors of the Land This year’s fundraising Gala will be held on Saturday, September 27th, at the Italian Center of Stamford, CT. Regions of Hungary: Northern Hungary (Felföld), Trans-Danubia (Dunántúl) and the Great Hungarian Plains (Alföld) will be presented, with an emphasis on regional characteristics of folk cos­tumes and music. The menu will be appropriate to these regions also. Proceeds from this year's Gala will provide con­tinued support of the Teleki-Bolyai Library, while educational grants for Hungarian high school stu­dents in Trans-Carpathia and Transylvania will be established. The promising young soprano, Ms. Eva Latranyi, will be the featured guest artist. Mr. Zoltán Zorandy will be piano accompanist, while the Zoltán Zorandy Orchestra will play music for listening and dancing. Admission and dinner are S80.00 per person; contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
