Looking around for an interesting article for the Magyar News, I switched the computer over to the internet. Remembering the exhibit in New York of the Zsolnay ceramics recently, gave me a pleasant idea; I should get information, hopefully pictures of the beautiful works. To my surprise scanning through Zsolnay headlines I found a Zsolnay Store in the U.S.A. Naturally I immediately opened it. There was a well organized homepage describing the history of the Zsolnay Above: Vilmos Zsolnay Below: The famous bulls ’ head fountain by Zsolnay in one of the squares of the city Pécs Manufacture, showing the products, or may I say pieces of art, in all categories. To my astonishment there were several antique pieces dating back over a hundred years. It was a real find of treasure, and some had my knees get weak looking at the price tags. One of the oldest vase they have shown had the tag of $25,000. On the other hand I was very pleased that a Hungarian artistic piece is so cherished in the world. Well this experience started me on a more exciting trip. Immediately I got in touch with the Zsolnay Store that is located in Newport, Rhode Island. This is what the owner of the store Frederico Santi wrote to me: “First, you may reproduce any photos in our web site for your publication. We do request that you list us as the resource with each photo. My partner, John Gacher, is 1/4 Hungarian. We visited Hungary about 15 years ago, for a month, and fell in love with the beauty of Zsolnay and incorporated it into our collected and antiques busi-This vase is 11.5” tall, gold and green eosin, made in 1899. Price $6,500.00 ness here in Newport. Have wrote a book about Zsolnay: “Zsolnay Ceramics: Collecting a Culture ” published about 4 years ago. We have about 150 Zsolnay items in our gallery at any one point in time with prices starting at $75.00 and up. We are a resource for Zsolnay Collectors, Museums and Dealers about Zsolnay and receive emails from all over the world each week with questions on the subject.
