Mhgvhr Nfcws This summer unfavorable weather effected many countries in Europe. Germany had the worst flood in a century, Austria was also included. We have seen pictures of Prague suffering from tremendous damage. We Hungarians nervously watched how the waters were entering the country. We all followed the peaking of the Danube hoping that the dikes would hold up and protect the land and the people. Luck was around and the flood didn’t become a major disaster. There was a lot of concern about the “Szigetköz”, north-west corner of Hungary, around the city of Győr. Thousands of people, including the military worked on the dikes and built dams with sandbags. In Budapest the Margit Island was a critical place but the effort to save it payed off. These pictures we obtained from many Hungarian publications, show some of the situations. The marker across the river from the Parliament at the peak of the flood doesn’t give much of a leeway for the water to rise. Settlements close to the river, unfortunately, were mostly affected. On the river the ships couldn’t pass under the bridges because of the high water. Some places the water found its way under the dikes and caused concern and actual flooding problems. The animal population in places as the Gemence Forest had to be helped to get onto higher grounds. The deer seemed to obey and travel as they were “requested” In the capitol, and other cities along the river the quays had been flooded so traffic, public and private, had to be detoured, but this, relatively, was only a short inconvenience. It was a good feeling watching the news daily, and noticing the all the work put into prevention saved the country. Page 1
