THE ADVENTURES DE KRISZTINA DERES I received letters from Krisztina Beres and I thought that our readers would be interested to read them. Krisztina is well known in her community. She was always active in the Hungarian events. She was also a recipient of the Mary Katona Scholarship Program of the American Hungarian Heritage Association (A.H.H.A.) Joseph F. Balogh, editor Hello Mr. Balogh. In September of 2002 I sent a letter to Norwalk representative Bob Duff and told him that I am a Police Officer with the Norwalk Police Department and that I was interested in singing the National Anthem for the 2003 opening day sessions (inauguration). Mr. Duff then sent me a letter and stated that he would try and see who is in charge. In December I received a letter from Mr .Duff and he stated that he spoke to Emily Westerberg, who is a legislative aid. and that she would get back to me. She asked me to submit a tape, which I did. Based on this tape I was invited for an audition on January 2. this year. This date also happened to be my 30th birthday. My mother came with me to Hartford. She and I made a wonderful day out of it. I was very happy that I had the privilege to be amongst the producers/writers of Saturday Night Live and hold the Emmy Award in MY HAND. We toured the Capitol and I had the privilege to sit in the Lt. Governor’s chair, made of cherry oak. The tour guide said that when people sit in that chair they should make a wish, and that will come through. So I did! On January 8, 2003 I was chosen to sing The National Anthem in police, uniform at the day of the inauguration ceremony. Before the ceremony I was also invited to the Speakers continental breakfast. There I met people who were Hungarian and they recognized my name as a Hungarian name. One of them even asked me about the Vizsla Kutya. The lady was excited to have a conversation in Hungarian. During this time I met many of the members of the Capitol. I got to meet Moira Lyons, Speaker of the House, also Governor Rowland and Lt. Governor Jody Rell. The Press secretary’s photographer took good pictures of the event. The person in charge of the National Guard also asked me to help out as a police officer when the Governor walked in. I had one of the greatest experience of my life. I must had been a bit bold but I also sent a letter to Ken Paul who is in charge of the of the Bridgeport Harbor Yard Arena offering my services. In return he also asked me to sing the National Anthem on January 16 at the Arena when the Fairfield University played a basketball game vs. Manhattan College . There were 4.000 people there! What an experience... Hi Mr. Balogh, I attended the Emmy Awards in Downtown Los Angeles in September. It was held at the Shrine Auditorium. I fortunately have friends in the TV industry and they had tickets. My friend Scott Summer, who is a meteorologist for CBS and local news in NJ, asked me to accompany him because his girlfriend at that time couldn’t attend. She felt bad about it but she was tied down somewhere else with her work. I arrived at the Hyatt Hotel in Los Angeles on Friday, September 20. The streets in the city were busy and there were glamorous people everywhere. My friend Meredith and I got our hair In uniform, standing with Moira Lyons Below: Welcoming the Governor and makeup done everyday. I felt like a star and I looked like one too. On Sunday, the day of the Emmy's, we had a hair and makeup artist come to the hotel. I had a beautiful gold dress on. There were about 10 of us, and a limo came to pick us up. It was my first time in a limo. When we got to the Shrine Auditorium, the police did a through checking on every vehicle and person. When I stepped out of the limo, Keffer Southerland was there, and he took hold of me and walked me up to the entrance. I saw many celebrities in passing. A few of my friends taped the event and told me that they saw me on TV walking down the RED CARPET! During the Emmy Awards, I was lucky to mingle with Martin Sheen (West Wing), Paula Abdule, Jim Falon (Saturday night Live), Carson Dailey, Kristen Davis (Sex in the City), and so on. There were celebrities everywhere. During the intermission everyone was amazed at how glamorous I looked and could not believe that I was a police officer. They also asked about my nationality because they said I look Eastern European! I was proud to tell them that I was Hungarian. After the Emmy Awards, we were invited to several of the gatherings. I enjoyed them all. The next day, my friend Meredith and I had dinner with Michael Borky (producer of Friends and Malcolm in the Middle). He was such a nice guy and very intellectual. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to attend the Emmy Awards! It was such a great experience. Page 2
