1000th ANNIVERSARY OF HUNGARYf Dies half century after sentenced to death. Gyula Obersovszky, living in Budapest, was a journalist, writer, and poet. He was sentenced to death for his opposition to Soviet control in Hungary in 1956. Obersovszky, during the upheaval of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution founded the "Igazsag" (Justice) newspaper on the second day of the 1956 revolt. The editors were Cs. Szabó and Péter Komoly. They set up shop in the offices of the “Művelt Nép” and the “Élet és Tudomány” in the New York Palace building. My office, that I still occupied, was the shortcut to the printing nouse, so to avoid leaving the building. The back entrance of the printing house was protected by tanks in a narrow street at the rear of the building. Tibor Tors, a freelancer to the Élet és Tudomány, took control there. As the situation worstened the dilivery of the newspaper was done by one of the tanks. When this had to be given up it was distributed through the sewer system. After November 4, the uprising was suppressed, and Obersovszky started the underground newspaper "Élünk" (Still Alive). This was considered an early version of samizdat, or "self published" underground press in the communist era. When the uprising was crushed fourteen intellectuals were brought to court and seven, including Obersovszky, received the death penalty in June 1957. There were many protesters internationally. Among them were Albert Camus, Ernst Hemingway, and the President of the World Council For Peace, Bertrand Russel. Obersovszky’s sentence was converted to life but he was released in 1963. From then till 1989 he was stripped from all his rights. Gaining freedom he founded the Committee for Historical Justice. Gyula Obersovszky died on a patriotic day of the Hungarian people, on March 15, in 2001. Joseph F. Balogh GOÖV comjtcTiohJ The United States is the sixth biggest trading partner of Hungary.
