Thomas and Jean O 'Connor with Hungarian children at the Heritage Wall A Debt of Gratitude By Antonio Procaccini Many non-Hungarians are enamored by the spirit of the Hungarians. The former mayor of Norwalk, Thomas C. O'Connor, was one of these. O'Connor passed away on Jan. 16, 200lat the age of 73, but the Hungarian-American community of Connecticut will always remember him and his special feeling for them. A Navy veteran intensely proud of his city and country, O'Connor was elected to the Common Council and the State House of Representatives in addition to his victory in the 1981 mayoral election. Heritage Wall in Norwalk, on the Route 7 Connector at West Avenue, was Mayor O'Connor's idea and he was delighted that the Hungarian community was the first to contribute toward the construction of the monument. It was also very fitting since his widow, Jean Vadas, is Hungarian- American. According to current Norwalk mayor Frank J. Esposito, O'Connor attended every ethnic ceremony at the wall since its founding, even when bad health impeded him. For his fervent support of all ethnic groups, we owe a debt of gratitude to Thomas O'Connor. Robert Essenyi of Norwalk, in a January 24th Norwalk Hour Letter to the Editor, suggested an appropriate way of doing this: renaming Heritage Wall "The Thomas O'Connor Heritage Wall". In October of this year, a ceremony will take place to do just that, according to Mrs. O'Connor. Let's be there to honor the mayor's memory! The author gives his personal thanks to Mrs. O'Connor for her assistance in preparing this article.
