TWISTERS 13V HUNGARIAN On the lighter side. . . . Schoolmates of my son, not knowing any Hungarian, probably never heard any, read the name Magyar News in some English distortion. They said “major” news. The Hungarian “gy” in “magyar” just didn’t work with them. What could I do? I got used to it. Then our outstanding printers at Exact Printing learned about it. Being more grown up, at least one would think, they started calling it major news too. But they had to go a step further then the little kids, so they named it “major newsence” under the leadership of Richard the Richman. Well as you might guess newsence is pronounced as “nuisance”. I try to live up to it. To punish them, I started to teach them some Hungarian. Hungarian tongue twisters. This made me a bigger nuisance. 1 was very happy about it. The other day I stopped at the printshop. Richard the Richman was happy to see me. This was a new experience. After saying many nice welcoming words, he handed me a pack of papers. He said that he got it off the internet. These were Hungarian tongue twisters. Wow, I thought, my Hungarian lectures found fertile soil. It was amazing. They were able to pick out the ones I tortured them with for the past few years. Based on this very slow success, I got the idea to present some of these to our readers. One doesn’t have to be Hungarian, but it helps to have a friend who could help out. Maybe we should give out somekind of an award for those who could translate some, or to those, who in some way could demonstrate their success in saying them. Balogh Socializing at the Hungarian School At occasions the members of the Hungarian School organized by Magyar Studies of America put their books down and just spend time together. This is when one could see them all in one room. Over seventy people from four different classes sit, drink their coffee and exchange notes about their studies. Now and then somebody brings in a gitár, sings, and have the others sing along. It is a good experience to see such activity in our midst when otherwise all we hear is that the Hungarian population in our area is dwindling. It is getting smaller with every funeral. The Magyar Studies defied this trend, opened up doors and has people showing interest in their ancestors and in general in the Hungarian culture. Besides the so called “students” we have to praise the officers of the organization and the devoted teachers. It is interesting to pan our area and realize that there are organizations who produce Hungarian events and activities. Just think of the National Celebrations, March 15, 1848; October 23, 1956; the spring ball Cafe Budapest: the musical shows; the picnics and dinners by the churches. In many cases there is a collaboration among organizations. Hopefully one day a stronger binding will develop and our youth may pay a more intensive participation in our traditions, heritage and culture.
