f \ Some of the sites of Hungary have the honor to be on the list of the “World Cultural Heritage" organization, part of the UNESCO. These are: Hortobágy, the Castle Hill, the Abbey of Pannonhalma, the karst caves of Aggtelek, and the village Hollókő. This is what Csaba Gedai said about Hollókő: The village of Hollókő forms one of the finest survivals of Hungary's folk heritage. This was acknowledged by UNESCO in 1987, which added the tiny village in Nógrád County to its World Cultural Heritage list. A group of 65 scheduled cottages have been preserved, overlooked by the ruins of a 13th-century castle on the hilltop above. Hollókő remains not as an open-air museum, but as a living community. The traditions of old are integral to the lives of the villagers. They belong to a distinctive ethnic group kown as the Palóc. Direct descendants of an ancient Hungarian tribe, the Palóc inhabit the valleys of the Cserhát Hills and the northern slopes of the Mátra, and across the border in modem Slovakia. The pictures show Hollókő, its people and some of the surrounding villages. The intention has been to present Hollókő not as a tourist attraction, out of its cultural context, but as one of the gems of the Palóc country.” Page 4
