1\AME Ol I lii: DAY DAY OF THE NAME Name-days and traditions To help catch up on name-days we will keep giving information about them with the help of Joseph Stiber. Some names have only one designated day, then some may have five. You might have to work on this. We will also try to incorporate the significant days of the month. These will give some incentive for doing traditional things, or as an almanac, calling for awareness or sorting out what should be done on a certain day. In Vas county boys dress up as a couple getting married, sit on a log and they are dragged to the “priest.” There they vow to be lazy, cheat, and bad attitude, all opposite of what should be. This tradition first held in a village where no girl got married the past year. Zsuzsanna is the nice one, she melts the snow away. Mátyás has to do the final clean-up. In the old days boys buried the bottle of new wine in the floor of the bar in the fall and this is the time to unearth it. Fun, singing, dancing, and frolicking goes on throughout the month. The last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are special. Tuesday is for fun, tricks, and the women to have an all night party without men. Wednesday is for cleaning the dentures and Thursday is the pig-out when all the leftovers have to be consumed.
