\A>i■; or tiii: bay bay or tiii: \aiii: Name-days and traditions Mária Osváth, Rozália Vasmatitcs and Judit Paolini Team Connecticut. She was one of the very few who upon receiving my pin didn't inquire, "What is Nau-ga-tuck?" or "Where is Naugatuck?"; it was great to meet someone who knew something about my hometown! Hungary was well represented by Aranyka Kanalas and Ilonka Horvath as they won the gold in ladies’ doubles! Their coach Margo Dunai was very pleased. We had such tun watching, cheering, and taking pictures. The girls enjoyed the compliments, praise, and attention which they well deserved. They were very glad that Maria 0. was there to share and take part in their joy of victory; and Maria was delighted to simply attend and be a part of it ALL! On Wednesday, we slept in...by the time Mom and I arrived to NCSU Team Hungary was nowhere to be found! Walking for two hours from one venue to another, we finally determined that the athletes were not on campus; as we were about to leave we spotted Ferenc who confirmed our sad discovery! Mom and I were tired and sought shelter from the heat which we found at the Talley Student Center. The next two hours passed quickly as we rested and chatted with Ferenc exchanging pleasantries and making plans to see the athletes another day. During our last two days at the games, we watched the grace and beauty of the gymnasts. We also had a chance to see Janos Wisinger once again as we sat together cheering for Team Hungary. One of the gymnasts won three medals including the gold; she was absolutely adorable and posed for a couple of pictures which certainly was part of the fun! We said our good byes on Friday though the games were still going strong. Our brief reunion with Team Hungary was quite extraordinary enriching our treasure chest of delightful memories! It was truly exhilarating to visit dear Hungarian friends whom we befriended surprisingly not in Hungary but in our home state of Connecticut in 1995 when New Haven so graciously hosted the WORLD! To help catch up on name-days we will keep giving information about them with the help of Joseph Stiber. Some names have only one designated day, then some may have five. You might have to work on this. We will also try to incorporate the significant days of the month. These will give some incentive of doing traditional things, or as an almanac, calls for awareness or sorts out what should be done on a certain day. SIGNIFICANT DAYS OF NOVEMBER: The first day, All Saints, and the second is designated to those who passed away. People go to the cemeteries and light candles on the grave and say their prayers. In some places they set the table and leave food for the visiting dead. 3. The day of Hubert, the defender of the hunters who around this time have the Hunter’s Balls. In our area the Hungarian Veterans used to have the Hubertusz Bál. 11. Marton the goose killer. It was originally a Roman tradition but since it was about the feast with roasted goose and new wine the Hungarians adapted it. The clergy at the feast received the rear part of the bird referred to as the “püspök falat.” 19. Elizabeth is weather forcasting. “If Elizabeth is wet then Katalin will knock.” Meaning that it will feeze. 25. Katalin is also forcasting. If it knocks then Christmas will be soft. So Elizabeth and Christmas will be the same. Also if a girl puts a twig into a vase and that will spring green by Christmas then the girl will get married next year. 30. András the pig slaughterer. During the day the folks are busy preparing the meat, kolbász and other goodies. For dinner a feast is set and accompanied with good wine. Some places children gather in the evening waiting for handouts dressed in inside-out coats, masks, and dance the “hurkatánc”, the rice-ring dance.
