Scholarship Forms ( MPtOMAS WflL PESERUED ) On May 22,1999, the Magyar Studies of America, Inc. held its year ending banquet at the Pearl of Budapest Hungarian restaurant in Fairfield. The decor, reminiscent of the old countiy, the fine Hungarian cuisine and the great service guaranteed a wonderful atmosphere and good time for everyone. No one wanted to leave for hours. The merriment was implemented with many raffle prizes, some of which were donated by local Hungarians, including the owner of the restaurant, Ms. Eva Hlacs. The leaders of the Magyar Studies of America expressed their gratitude for the organization of the banquet at such a high level, and for the exclusive use of the premises which was filled to capacity. Most of the guests came a very long distance to attend the midweek festivities, but it did not stop them from also attending the Magyar Studies of America's last classes four days later, nullifying some professional educator's predictions of a low turnout. Tme, one student didn't make it, and that was due to tremendous traffic coming from the airport. The students, many of whom are not of Hungarian origin, unanimously expressed their desire to return to study in coming autumn. This translates into great joy to the Magyar Studies of America, as the attendance of the students, their hard work and their support of the Hungarian language and heritage help keep these alive and flourishing in our New World. The Magyar Studies of America began its 1998/1999 school year with only one class last fall. The increasing number of new students and the growing level of Hungarian knowledge of some of the other students necessitated the addition of more classes. During the year the number of classes increased to 3, and even an embroidery class was offered and got started by one of the students, Ms. Monica Horlik. Page 2 The Hungarian school which, after several years of interruption, started again in October, 1998, concluded the school year in the classrooms of the Fairfield Woods Middle School with results beyond expectation. The student body was one of the best in the history of the Magyar Studies of America. The Organization gained attention of other states' Hungarian media for whom, at their request, several articles were provided. As evidence of the Magyar Studies of America's resolute goal to cooperate with and reach out to Hungarian communities, the Organization produced and broadcast on the WVOF Radio a program commemorating the 1848/1849 Hungarian freedomfight. The Magyar Studies of America, which is an official, nonprofit organization, teaches free of charge by volunteers whose unselfish teamwork and efforts are tremendously appreciated by the Board of Directors. This past year's teachers were (in alphabetical order): Aranyi Katalin, Horlik Monica, Lengyel Zsuzsa and Miklós Valeria. The 1999/2000 school year, with 4+ classes will commence in October. There are also plans to start class(es) for children. Information will be forthcoming in the next issue of Magyar News. Call Steve Miko AMSCo.
