NAME OF THE DAY JULY DAY OF THE NAME and Name-days and traditions AUGUST A s is known, the Hungarians celebrate /\ name-days, in general, and not 1 Ybirthdays. To help people catch up on name-days we will keep giving information about it with the help of Joseph Stiber. You should know that some names have only one designated day, then some have five. You might have to work on this. We will also try to incorporate the significant days of the month These will give some incentive doing traditional things, or as an almanac, calls for awareness or sorts out what should be done on a certain day. SIGNIFICANT DAYS OF JULY: You wouldn’t believe it but they say Margit is mad. Though this would be the first beachday it is spoiled by torencious rain and storm. Jacob has a historical significance. It is called the day of guarding the vinyard. The word guarding is misleading because it did not protect against criminals. The origin goes back to the Turkish occupation. After the battle of Mohács the Turks got into the habit of pouncing onto a village on Sundays when the people were in Church. They were waiting for the girls. Little did they know that the Hungarian girls could get out of tight situations. Well what did the girls do? They switched clothes with the old ladies, left the church bent over, imitating the way old folks walk. Then they took off to the vinyards where they hid til the Turks went away. The boys brought food for them and “stayed around” protecting them. On the 26th people celebrate Anna. This is the time for the famous, traditional Anna-Balls.
