This Hungarian language weekly newspaper was published in Bridgeport . It started after World War I and went on for a few decades. It was published from 1914 to 1942. I have been looking for it in many places. Unfortunately I was only able to find a few copies. I am also looking for “A mi lapunk” from 1942 to 1949 which changed its name to “Amerikai Magyarság” in 1949. Shortly after it was absorbed by “Jó Pástor.” There is one more. Going back to 1907 a weekly paper was published under the name of ’’Bridgeporti Újság.”We would also like to find a weekly paper published by the catholics. This was the “Magyarok Vasárnapja” and the editor was Fr. Cserniczki. If you know about it or if you happen to have copies hiding in the attic please give me a call at 203- 377-0569, Thanks very much for your consideration. This newspaper is a source of Hungarian history in this Connecticut area. It is new around here on one of the store fronts. The full name is:”Laszlo’s Arts Cafe” and it is located in Monroe. You can find it on Route 111 as you pass Wakeman’s, the old Reads Warehouse and the Sippin complexes nothing big or outstanding but it has a Hungarian name. That was enough for for my wife Claudia when she saw an article about it in the Connecticut Post. We took a ride to get an experience. The place was nice and clean, enough seating for 40 people, a space for a music band with all the necessary amplification and dmm-set. On a side wall paintings and drawings from budding artists, and in other places some art and photographs by the owner, László. Not simply László, but László Szegedi. He is very modest but one could feel that he is proud when with proper pronunciation tells us that his family came from Szaszhalombatta. I know that it is a mouthful, but it is Hungarian. I looked around to find some Hungarian connection. The ambiance didn’t show anything but the pastry case did. There were the authentic Hungarian baked goodies. Also they had the authentic taste. Since it was lunch time we ventured into having some “fast food”. The home made soup had the benchmark of a good Hungarian cook, in this case László’s mother. Szegedi néni. A sandwich, by looking at it, seemed to be the usual, but the first bite convinced one otherwise. It was well put together, good tasting and plentiful. The fresh coffee they served was a good choice. We missed out both on the morning and the evening special happenings. At dinner time there is entertainment; new bands, new singers, poets. One day somebody famous will refer to László’s Arts Cafe as the place where they started. In the store there is a billboard and one can’t help but notice that every evening has a listing of entertainment, and in addition they show videos. One day some Hungarian performance will follow the name and the pastries. Perhaps our community will supply a new talent We wish László Szegedi success and I’m sure that if you went, you would run into Hungarian patrons. We did. Even though there was no singing and dancing our friendly talk across the tables created a warm familiar atmosphere. Joseph F.
