The Hungarian Cultural Society of Connecticut /HCSC/ has been actively committed to support the needs and aspirations of Hungarian minority groups in the Carpathian Basin, We have provided funds for building projects of high schools and colleges in Transylvania and Trans- Carpathia. We have also contributed to the restoration of churches and cultural centers and have been instrumental in equipting schools with computer systems. Since 1995, our fundraising efforts have focused on the procurement and installation of parabolic /dish/ antennas for remote communities, enabling them to be connected into the information network of the world, frequently for the first time in their history. Inhabitants of these communities were given the opportunity to watch television broadcasts and listen to programs in their native languages. Since the late 1980's, our annual fundraising activities used to culminate with a banquet at the Hotel Sheraton in Waterbury, CT. 1998 proved to be an exciting year of new beginnings. We decided to plan for a season-ending Cocktail Party and have the locale of the same moved to the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut. Our fundraising “Party” took place on Saturday, September 26th; it proved to be a remarkably successful function, indeed! Newly-found friends in the Fairfield- Greenwich area were enormously receptive, supportive and generous. More than Page 4 one hundred guests mingled most amiably in the beautifully decorated Hall of the Museum. The formal portion of the program started at 7 PM., when Dr. Balázs B. Somogyi welcomed the participants. He introduced Mrs. Clara Felsöbüki Nagy, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee. Mrs. Nagy expressed her gratitude to members of the Committee; At the same time, she encouraged those present to participate in the "silent auction" as generously as possible. The Honorable Christopher Shays, United States Congressman of the Fourth District, State of Connecticut, addressed the guests at this point. He expressed his full-hearted support of the dish antenna campaign; Mr. Shays was a very popular "surprise visitor." Mrs. Alice Nonay, the artist-painter Paul Nonay's widow, was acknowledged most warmly. Ms. Mary Radclifife, president of the Greenwich Symphony, introduced Ms. Christine Kiss, the internationally recognized pianist. Ms. Kiss, winner of a number of prestigious piano competitions and a popular recitalist in Spain, Greece, Austria. Hungary, Belgium and the United States, performed an all-Liszt program. Her selections included the Siegesmarsch, the Goethe-Fest-marsch, in addition to two opera transcriptions: one from Gounod's Romeo and Juliette and the other from Weber's Oberon. Ms. Kiss proved to be a commanding musical force again: her highly charged, authoratative presentation was received enthusiasticaly. The "silent auction" was unexpectedly popular and successful, netting a significant amount of money, to be available for the procurement of additional parabolic antenna systems. We presented a very successful, colorful exhibition from the works of the renowned Hungarian-American artist, József Dómján. A topical exibition related to the parabolic antenna program was featured also. Mr. Jeff Guimond and Mr. Keith Bonner provided musical selections on the piano and the flute, respectively, throughout the evening. We wish to express our special appreciation to Mr. Thomas Péterffy and Ms.Mary Radcliffe for their extremely generous contributions. We gratefully acknowledge the contribution and support of Abbey Richmond Rental Services ,lnc. of Fairfield, CT. and Greenwich Florist of Cos Cob, CT. Valuable technical assistance by Dr. Csaba Lóránth is also greatly appreciated. The Cocktail Party of September 26th turned out to be a most gratifying success at multiple levels, in every sense of the word. We truly cherish the interest, support and generosity of all the donors, contributors and participants. We invite all of you to be part of our fundraising activities in the future also. Dr. Balázs B.Somogyi
