One really learns what a rugged terrain is when riding on a peasant wagon drawn by a pair ox oxen. Those who had the opportunity in Hungary attest to that. This experience came to mind when I was watching images of the Moon surface. Little did I know that the ride on the rough Moon-land has something to do with the Hungarians. It might be in the genes that Hungarians happen to find a way around this problem. One is to dismount off the wagon, the other is to travel on the softer shoulder of the road. Then there is the opportunity to invent something that smooths out the ride. Well there was a Hungarian genius who happened to challenge the Moon and worked on a vehicle that denied the hardship of the unchartered Moon roads. Ferenc Pavlich was the chief engineer of the team that designed and produced the Lunar Roving Vehicle, called the Moon Buggy by the unscientific people. This vehicle made the first extraterrestrial ride in history. When expanded the Buggy measured lo feet in length and 4 feet in height. It was able to cany close to 1000 pound, twice its own weight, moved with the speed of 13 miles per hour. It could ride over one foot high obstacles and cross two foot crevices. On its first journey it covered 18.6 miles.. It also made three visits before retiring. It would be nice to see how a modified Buggy would do on some Hungarian back country roads.
