Passaic pays tribute to Anny Kapitány The Hungarian Museum is located in the oldest library in Passaic. The library is a monumental historical building with two floors. On the first floor the public library operates, the second floor the Hungarian Museum operates. The second floor rooms are the home of Hungarian Historical exhibition. Also there is a medium size auditorium that is the scene of the Anny Kapitány Exhibition. Anny Kapitány was from the age of 15 a star of the Hungarian entertainment world and popular music scene. Immediately after the second World War and before the Communist take-over she was featured vocal artist of more than a 100 recordings. Her specialty was the phenomenal interpretation of American popular tunes in the Hungarian language. After her migration to the U.S.A. and until her death she remained a popular singer within the Hungarian community, and to a limited degree in the American Musical Scene. An untimely and sudden death has shortened her career. The exhibit includes her recordings and letters among the many memorabilia of her life. In the afternoon when the exhibit opened there was a special Panel Discussion. Kalman Magyar remembered Anny Kapitány’s life and achievements. The New York Hungarian Radio welcomed the Exhibition in life announcement by Ms. Kapitany’s old friend: Gyula Apatini. He welcomed three other friends who were present at the opening event: Mihály Hontvary, Ferenc Varday Valu and Zoltán Zorandy. He remembered the old days when they appeared together in concerts in Broadway’s Town Hall Theater and in the World Trade Center. Kalman Magyar interviewed the three friends. Mihály Hontvary talked about Anny Kapitany’s personal life, how she started as a dancer and later changed to be a singer because of a muscular illness. Ferenc Vardai Valu talked about his cooperation with Ms. Kapitány in his first musical record the "Romantic Wild West". This music was presented in a concert in the Town Hall Theater in New York. The arranger and orchestra leader was: George Havas. Zoltán Zorandy talked about the professional capability and quality of Anny Kapitány. She had a very unusual alto voice with a wide scale. As a pianist he accompanied her for decades and they also were personal friends. In the end Kalman Magyar asked the three friends, what is their opinion about the achievements of Hungarians in this country and what should be the right thing to do in the future? A picture of Amy Kapitány from the collection of a goodfriend, Rozsika Deutsch. The answer was unanimous; Do the same thing what you started to do today. Call attention to the neglected emigrant Hungarian art and artists. They are one of the most important factors of the survival of our national heritage in this country We all owe many thanks to Kalman and Judit Magyar, also to Mr. and Mrs. Kerkay for their extraordinary work in the interest of Hungarians art.
