•.+*#$***&+*• To get into deep water one has to travel all the way from Europe, more specifically from Hungary, to Bridgeport. This is where the Long Island Sound is and this is where every year the big event takes place. It was the 10th year of the marathon swimming from Port Jefferson, Long Island to the Captain’s Cove in Bridgeport, a 17.5 miles distance. The 1997 event brought in $700,000 that will benefit St Vincent Hospital’s cancer prevention services program. At Captain's Cove a number of entertainer participated. There was chorus, band, dancers, fun for children and precision sky diving. It was amazing to see a diver land on the mark on the deck. An other diver w ho was clearing the building was caught suddenly by a wind shear and forced to land on the other side. While all this was going on. the swimmers were “sweating” their way across the Sound. For the past three years there was a Hungarian in the swim team. He came from Dunaújváros. Hungary, where he is a phvs-ed teacher. Attila Molnár. Naturally we were very please to have a Hungarian in the competition. All the people from our community were anxious to see him. but they had to wait till the awarding ceremony. They really got excited when it turned out that Attila was among the first three, behind an italian and a Czech. With 5 hours 45 minutes and eleven seconds time on the 17.5 mile distance he was only 9 minutes and 36 seconds behind the first place w inner. Quite an accomplishment. It took the last swimmer over 8 hours to fin-Attila Molnár after his finish ish the competition this time. Attila Molnár, age 27. has a long list to his victories. 1st ranked International Marathon Swimming Association. 4th place in “Super Final” Traversee International du lac Memphremagog. Canada. 1st place overall finisher in Mar del Plata Marathon, Argentina. Swim Across The Sound 2nd in 1995. 3rd in 1996 and in 1997. I am sure that many members of our Hungarian community would had liked to get together with Attila. Maybe we will be more alert for the next time and be able to organize something. J. F.
