The Hungarians were planted into Europe by coming from the east. They established a Christian Kingdom in the Carpathian Basin and became Europe’s protective shield against the East. in publications aware of Hungary. the question always emerges :”East or West?” What is our future. Europe or Asia? Is it Asia where every outburst came trying to destroy us starting with the Pechenyegs, continued by the Mongolians, the Turks and finally the Soviets? Or is it Europe into where we were never accepted. The most Christian French Kings never made a moral issue, when they put a pact together with the Turks against their Christian neighbors. So Hungary took the beating. Out of the 4 million population 80% had Hungarian for the mother tongue, but after the occupation only 45% of the 3.5 million spoke it. The loss was over a million and a half. To this, one has to add the loss of population growth during the 150 year Turkish occupation. Many minorities were accepted who found later a stable state and much support. The XX Century: Is it the century of human rights and democracy? Did anything change for us from the East or the West? At the end of WW I the masters of Trianon (today it is known that they were political ignorants) shouted big slogans and out of petty, self serving, they chopped up Hungary, exposing millions of Hungarians, without reason, to malice retribution. “Vae victis” was the dominant factor. After WW 11 a new set of two-faced ignorant politicians in Paris threw the maimed Hungary into the hands of the murderess tyrant, to the Communist Soviets, a political threat they themselves despised. It was in 1956 when Hungary’ stood up against this dictatorship. The w hole world admired and w as aware of the Hungarians freedom fight. During this time, Free Europe Radio was constantly encouraging :”Don’t give up. we are coming to help” even though they kneyv America was telling Moscow that the Hungarian situation is considered the internal affair of the Soviets. The world may have these events fading from their memory and may not recall Albert Camus’ cry in 1966:” The ran-over and shackled Hungary in the past twenty years did more for freedom than any other nation in the world. To have the deaf Western Societies understand this historical lesson, the Hungarians had to lose a great amount of An intersection in Budapest. In the forground a Soviet tank blood - and the flow of this blood seems to dry up in the memories.” Well the question is still :”East or West?” In 1956 Hungary made the first step to bring down international Communism. In 1989 it was Hungary who finished it by opening the Communist Iron Curtain dividing Europe. That small gap was enough to make an empire tumble. So what benefit did the Hungarians get out of it? Previously Hungary’s economy served the Soviet Interest. It was suggested to Hungary to take on horrendous bank loans from the West to support the world power of the Soviet. The Hungarian people just had morsels of it. After 1989 the thugs of the free West without mercy demand the payments and the interest putting the livelihood of the Hungarians into jeopardy The World Bank signed the death certificate and the Hungarian Secretary of Finance obeyed. Hope is diminishing because the most of the profit making industries are not under Hungarian control anymore. This seems to be the help we receive from the West. At the same time is there an Eastern danger brewing? The question is:”Is there a future for the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin?” Based on what we see now. the future doesn’t look bright. The XX century genocide of the Hungarians started immediately at Trianon. Contemporary news reports gave heartbreaking pictures of Hungarians in Czechoslovakia being deported in boxcars. These boxcars remained their homes in Hungary because at the same time the Rumanians with the support of the French, raided and looted the country. Nobody showed respect toward the articles of rights included in the peace treaty , neither the countries that took a chunk out of Hungary, nor the power that had the responsibility to enforce them. After WW II Üie genocide of Hungarians flourished. Recently mass graves in Serbia were unearthed or are in the process of it, showing sadist brutality of maimed bodies of Hungarians.
