Győző Leblanc This is the third year in a row that Hungarian organizations of Greater Bridgeport and Wallingford with concerted effort brought to us high quality artistic entertainment from Hungary. First we enjoyed the Szalay Gypsy Orchestra, then twice now the lead opera soloists from Budapest. Last year they performed the Gypsy Baron and this year Die Fledermaus, respectively in Hungarian the Cigány Báró and the Denevér. Moving around among the audience it was like one minute being in Budapest and the next minute in the USA. Mixed with the Hungarians were many who didn’t speak the Hungarian language, or do not belong to the Hungarian community. Despite all this they were raving about the beauty of the voices and the quality of the performance. The program book carried the story of the play and was very useful to bridge the language barrier. And then there were the unofficial interpreters who proudly stepped in to help out. Looking behind the scenes one could only say the utmost praising of the artists. One would think that there were dressing rooms with big stars on the doors. But the reality was that they were in classrooms trying to fit into the desks that were designed for elementary school students. It seemed like they didn’t notice it and were happy to bring their service to Hungarians who long to reach out and touch part of the old country. We all appreciate what these artists brought to us. We are glad that there are people who have two things in their heart; love for their people and love for their art. It is also appropriate to thank our organizations for their hard work: the American Hungarian Heritage Association, the Hungarian Cultural Society of Connecticut, the Hungarian Community Club of Wallingford, and the Pannónia Hungarian American Club. We are looking forward to next year’s cultural event. Erzsébet Pelle Kázmér Sárkány Page 3 Die Fledermaus
