CENSUS (continued from page ~n from the pot, giving something that they could replace part of their lost history. I could also mention the Irish demonstrating in an annual huge parade, doing something more “Irish” then what they do in their homeland. We see the Greeks pledging lavishly to keep up their Centers. We could pick on many more people. It seems that it is easier to melt down the minority problems with all of the others. There would be no majority or minority, there would only be “we Americans”. With this Census there would be no documentation of differences, so there will be no minorities either. Very convenient. To push the issue a little bit further; there will be no reason for nationality names, probably no names at all. One could be called ’’waiter #165” or “mechanic #5052”. They might be looking into the future. Like Huxley’s Brave New World. They might prefer cloning to immigration. Expanding this world-wide there will be no more Hungarians, Germans, or whatever, we will be “Earthlings” as I referred to above. Sorry, but we are proud of our heritage. We want to know how many Hungarians there are, and where. We want to know about the million and a half of our brothers and sister who were counted last time here in the States. We are also proud of our ancestors. They gave their blood and life to save Europe from the Mongol invasion, from the Turks, and put the monkeywrench into the Communist Soviet. Let us not forget that scientists from Hungary made it possible for the U.S. to end WW II. Our scientists also made substantial contribution to the world of technology. Sure we are proud, we don’t want to forget the accomplishments of our people benefiting mankind. We don’t want others to forget it either. Everybody should know that there are Hungarians. One third of the total Hungarian population today lives outside of the country’s borders. “Thanks” to the ignorant decision makers of the international community the original borders were misplaced. The bulk of the Hungarian immigrants left behind a crippled country to came to these shores. As much as they all appreciate becoming members of this new nation, they didn’t expect to give up the fact that they are Hungarians. Just count all the Hungarian churches these people built, not from old money but from back breaking hard work. I don’t think marriages into families of other nationalities could be called a melting pot. This works in both direction, there are losses and there are gains. It is a blessed situation We see an interesting trend among the younger generation. They are becoming more conscientious about their background. Recently I receive a letter from Ohio listing a number of names. All they know is that the family came from Hungary, but they want to put the family tree together. We could continue, but as one could see there are many factors that put the damper on the Census Form. We want the Ancestry question included. WE WANT TO BE COUNTED! Joseph F.
