Rev. Babos’ speaking engagements, both Rev. and Mrs. Babos were very popular speakers. The Church Women United of Fairfield provided many learning experiences and growth in the Lord’s work in our Fairfield churches. Mrs. Babos served as president. Recently, when she was informed of the 50th anniversary celebration, she wrote a beautiful letter. We were blessed as a family to have our two daughters taught in Sunday School and confirmation classes by Rev. Babos. They enjoyed his serious lessons and also his hearty laughter. The Sunday worship services with most meaningful biblical messages became a wonderful combination, and the love of God was evident. The Baboses taught the Vacation Bible School classes and many Hungarian songssongs and more songs. Then warm, wonderful cozy house with the great aroma coming from the kitchen was special, the piano in the living room and even the den and the dining room walls were full of books, the tree shaded grape arbor and the yard filled with flower beds were never too precious to share. Best of all was Rev. and Mrs. Babos’ open door and the big smiles as you entered. Their rustic cottage in Northfield, Mass, was a place of equal welcome to their extended church family which provided fun, frolic, and restful fellowship. We have kept in touch with the family throughout the years. I would like to share one lovely note I received while Rev. Babos was still living and was at home in California. Mrs. Babos wrote: “Thank God we have His Peace in our hearts, knowing that we are in His Hand. My Rev. is wonderful and is taking his illness calmly. We do have many reasons to give thanks to our Lord!!” How could we ever feel Rev. Babos is away? The memories of his love of God and the love of life and friends will sustain his beloved partner who encouraged him. He also had the love of his three caring children and their families, close to them, and close by to help their wonderful parents. Blessmgs and thanks for the opportunity to write a very small but meaningful part of the life of a beloved Pastor- The Reverend Alexander Babos. It happens every time I sit down at the TV to watch the athletes march into the arena at the opening ceremonies. They are all coming in with their flags, one after the other. I am hardly waiting for the Hungarians. We are getting close, Germany, Greece - and dam it they switch over to some commercial. It happened now and it happened in Barcelona, too. Now, aren’t you upset too? I believe that the Hungarians deserve more respect. True we are a small nation but in comparison we do pretty well. If ten million Hungarians win ten medals the a country with twohundred million population should show off with twohundred medals. Well there is no such thing. For example this time Hungary received twentyone medals, the USA onehundred and one, China only 50. With all the turmoil going on m Hungary, their athletes were not quite ready. In favorable time they did a lot better. Let us not forget that in 1896 Hungary was among the thirteen nations in Greece at the first modem Olympic Games. Seven athletes brought home 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. In 1936 at the Berlin Olympics Hungary was the third on the top. Then they altered between the positions of four, six ... In Helsinki they harvested sixteen golds, ten silvers and sixteen bronzes. Aladar Gerevich, between 1932 and 1960, took part in six games earning six gold medals with the fencing team and an individual one too. Krisztina Egerszegi entered the games this year with four gold medals and is bringing home the fifth one. Hungaiy was generous the the USA giving her seven coaches for American teams throughout the years, not counting Bela Karoly who became a center figure at these Games. We were also glued to die TV screen watching Karch Király in volley ball for the USA. By the way Karch is the American way for Karcsi. At the opening ceremonies I saw a white man representing a southern island nation. His name was Attila. Then from other countries we met Gabriella Szabó, Réka Szabó, Joseph Gönczi and Josh Lakatos. All medal winners. Not bad for the small Hungarian nation. Joseph F.
