Festival of Trees The Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, this year organized the Eighth Annual Festival of Trees. These are conventional Christmas trees with special decorations according to the nationality each represents. Naturally in the foreground one will find the Hungarians, then Colonial America, Victorian, Greece, Ukraine and many European countries. It is a feast of pleasures to see it. The commemorative exhibit on Hungary, 1100 Years we wrote about in a past issue will also be open. These exhibitions will close January 26. Do not miss out on the exceptional opportunity. Audio Club Did you hear about it? Unfortunately nobody ever heard about it. There is only one reason that it hasn’t happened. The reason is that one person is needed to get hold of the idea and do a little organizing. One really needs very very few tilings to do. You have to get a few friends together who would like to practice the knowledge of the Hungarian language. Have handy a tape player - everybody has one - and decide on a place and time to do it. It could be alternating among eachother’s home, and there could be more than one club even at the same time. We will supply the hour long tapes. The contents of these are history, music, literature , folk costumes, comedy and whatever. Try to call 377-0569 and you will hear some good news. If you play two hours eveiy week, you will need over a couple of years to listen to all the tapes that we have. We deeply regret that an oversight of a technical problem in our December issue resulted in a few typografical errors. This is the way the poem reads: Triumphant Defeat Nineteen fifty six October twenty-three Twas twelve years Hungary was not free. Unarmed students marched to Radio Budapest To ask for a grievance airing request. The “AVOs” fired into this peaceful crowd, Rioting and revolt Budapest enshroud. Nineteen fifty-six November four Soviet troops, tanks, and police did score. They mowed down the patriots ruthlessly, Who bravely fought back, relentlessly. Weeks of bloodshed, chaos let loose; Strikes, deportation, epidemic ensues. Nineteen fifty-six November twenty-eight Freedom fighters left unaided to their fate. Yet, history will prove this revolt was grand, Brave Hungarians against odds did stand. Their sacrifice for Liberty did meet Time will prove a Triumphant Defeat. What we also find is in the five words 7 have promises to keep, ’ an interpretation of our walk with God. Whatever else may distract us, or confuse us, or even crush us on the way from childhood to adolescence, through the middle ages to old age, this is a star of truth that shines over us undimmed: I have promises to keep. ” These are the opening words of an article in a religious newsletter of the Navy. The immediate question is why do we have this in the Magyar News. The answer is more simple than you could imagine. The article was written by Chaplain Leila Havadtoy. Leila grew up among us in Fairfield, attended school here. Her English teacher in high school still remembers her fondly as a good student who loved literature very much. We also know Leila from the United Church of Christ where she substituted in the absence of a permanent minister. Her sermons were not just uplifting and spiritually enriching, but they were also including references to great literary work, making THINKING ABOUT BUYING OR SELLING? Her sermons were always a religious experience. But, as it is with life, it goes on and people are put into different places and given different obligations. It was good to learn about the newsletter and in connection to this about Leila’s where abouts. She, Lt. Leila Havadtoy, is the Protestant Command Chaplain with a staff of six assistances under her supervision at the Naval Air Station in Sigonella, Sicily. This is the major air base for the U.S. Sixth Fleet Mediterranian Operations. Leila takes care of the spiritual well being of the many thousand on duty and civilian personnel, including the family members on the base. As we hear she is doing a marvelous job and she finds time within her tight schedule to write for papers and magazines to the military community and also for the local papers. As much as we miss her, we wish Leila lot of happiness in her calling and work, and we hope that she doesn’t forget us. On the lighter side, now that we experienced some bad cold days, we would love to listen to her sermons - in Sicily.
