You may laugh at this headline but give it a little thought. Immigrants, refuges, illegals and whoever came to this country had their share of a language problem. Even those with some prior knowledge stumbled left and right. We Hungarians fortunately most of the time were lucky to have the support of our community. Many, specially in the old days didn’t have to venture into English as a second language, all they had to learn was basically part of the language that was needed in the stores for shopping. Once I met a man who came to this country as a teenager and worked in Detroit till he retired. That id he worked for over a century. He seemed to be confused when I spoke to him in English till he popped the question:”Mister, you no speak Hungarian?” I really felt bad. Today this problem is different. The Hungarian communities are smaller, more and more communication is necessary just to stay afloat. Somehow Hungarians have the tendency to pick up enough of a foreign language to get around. What they keep for a long time is the accent. A cousin of mine , bom here, went to collage, and after he got married his wife helped him get rid of the heavy Hungarian accent. At our churches there is a continuous attempt to have language courses. These turn out to be quite successftd. They are mostly designed for children to learn the Hungarian language. Occasionally some courses for adults work for a short period. Nowadays when the English would be a prominent necessity, living in a computer world, an immigrant could only go to public classes where if out of luck instead of a Hungarian they might pick up an oriental accent. Recently, I received some information that could solve part of the problem. It might not be earth shaking but it is very good. It looks like a mini computer, or if you so desire a shrunken one. It has a keyboard and buttons. What you may notice immediately is that some keys have two letters on it. This has to do with the many accents that the Hungarian language has. And - now grab onto your seats -it even speaks. It does it in both languages, in Hungarian and in English. Pretty smart for such a small thing. It contains 220,000 words and phrases, all you have to do is type it in. Now here come the tricky part. You might know a word in English the way you heard it. You have no idea how to spell it, and you are confused with the English spelling anyhow. Let us say that you want to spell the word “enough.” If you only know it the way a Hungarian would, it will come out like: “INUF.” So you type it in, push the proper button and it spells out ENOUGH. Also tells you the Hungarian meaning. As an other example, you say Hungarian and it sounds Hungarian. This little machine will correct you pronunciation and make it Hungarian. It also works a Thesaurus, that is, it picks out the proper word from a selection. Let us say that you rather sit at home then go to school. I would say that this choice is the wrong one because it is not enough to learn a language, it is important to learn how to communicate it. This happens in cooperation with other people. For a young man it is advantageous to date an The "machine” American girl, it is the best incentive to learn how to communicate. I”m sorry to say you still have to learn the language. The price, compared to vocabularies, grammar book and reading material, doesn’t sound bad when you say twohundred and fifty Dollars.
