enjoying themselves. Rozsika provided her blend of Hungarian favorites. The Tapetts from Black Rock and the Golden Follies entertained everyone under unusual circumstances. The festival closed to the tunes of the Budapest Melodies Orchestra from New York. There are a large number of people to thank from each of the participating congregations. If I didn’t fear I would be leaving someone out, I would list all of the workers. Instead, let me just lift up the names of the folks from each church who served on the original planning committee: From Calvin United Church of Christ: Rev. Bela Poznan, Mr. Ray Gilliam, Mrs. Margaret. Kaminski. From St. Emery’s Roman Catholic Church; Father Robert Nemeth, Father Emeric Szlezak, and Mrs.. Maureen Lasko. From The Church of the Resurrection: Rev. Rocco Florenza, Rev. Dan Griffin, Mr. Howard Green, Sr., Mr. Daniel DePalma. From First United Church of Christ: Dr. Anthony Szilagyi, Mr. Gerald Szor. In closing it should be noted that the success of our festival was due, in large part, to the cooperation and unselfish support of the Williams family of Captains IJ S A- MAGYARORSZÁG €xport-lmport-Custom House----------)------—--------------------------Autóját, ingóságait vagy bármilyen méretű és súlyú csomagját zárt konténerben a legkedvezőbb áron , szállítjuk. Jan Williams, especially, worked closely with us from the start. Jan helped us in many ways; direct, ing us to the right people to talk to in City Hall, to helping us meet all of the requirements that are essential to fulfill when putting on such an event. Jan and her dad Kaye, opened their facility to us and went the extra mile. In know that I speak for all the folks involved with the festival when I say “Thanks Jan and Kaye.” And of course, a special word of thanks and gratitude to all the workers who gave of their time to help make this community event such a success! Rev. Dr. Anthony Szilagyi St. Emery ’s Picnic One of the focal points of Westend reminiscence was the Bamum Circus which annually brought the parade of animals through the streets to the circus lot that featured the hand and elephant raising the tents. Excitement coveted the area with sounds, smells and the swell of people that would convene to be entertained. August 4-th brought a similar sense of excitement at the St. Emery’s School ground, as tents were raised, soda and ice cream trucks, coolers to handle the foods and fresh barrel that would chill the adultpalate on a great summer day, were strategically placed. Grills primed to heat the toltott káposzta, gulyás leves, káposztás tészta, kolbász and kraut, liver and bacon, funnel cakes: Hungarian pastries that filled an entire classroom; sweet com eagerly husked; games for the children held on the convent grounds gave the sound, the aroma and the excitement to the gift of being together at St. Emery’s 64 consecutive Church picnic. Like the circus, the Parish Picnic “took to the road” for years: remember St. Stephen’s Grove, Hines and Eickner’s Grove, the Fairfield Knights of Columbus Grove, the Bridgeport Wonderland of Ice, and Holy Gost and Warsaw Park? Now the Picnic is home on St. Emery’s School ground - and thank to those who came with their families to be there together in God’s love. Fr. Robert Nemeth Page 5
