OCT 7, SATURDAY at 7:30 PM in the auditorium at the Tomlinson School in Fairfield (200 Unquowa Road, across the street from the Railroad Station the famous SZALAI HUNGARIAN GYPSY ORCHESTRA will perform. Call Frank Polke 334-5174 or Tony Zad 333-7480. PAGE 2 IT IS JUST AMAZING Going back many months we started to hear about a big sports event that will take place in New Haven. As we payed more attention to it we found out that it will be an international competition for mentally retarded people who made accomplishments in the field of sports Without expecting a confirming answer we inquired about the Hungarians. To our surprise we were told that they will be attending 56 strong. That is 41 athletes and the rest will be the support staff. After this, everything seemed to quiet down. But this was only on the surface. Letters and faxes came, the phone rang more often. The question became: ’’Where are the Hungarians going to stay ? ” Then came an other surprise. We found out that there was a lottery and the host town for the the Hungarian Delegation is Naugatuck. Naugatuck? Who is Hungarian there? - Nobody knew. The rest of the 120 nations were housed in different surrounding towns. People dián't seem to know what is going on. The Hungarian communities along our shoreline thought that they were left out. As it turned out the Hungarian delegation couldn t have asked for better hosts. It took 14 months of preparation to have them stay for 3 days and then being followed for an other week during the games. 14 months ago Dean Tarsi, chairman of the Host Town Committee, remarked not knowing who the Hungarians are and when he found out what obligation they are supposed to take on he thought it was crazy to get into it. But when the Hungarian team was saying good-bye after the games, one could hardly find an eye in Naugatuck without tears running .They learned who the Hungarians are and locked them in their hearts. We admire the people of Naugatuck for their effort, hospitality and their unusually big heart. We dedicate this issue of the Magyar News to the Host Town Committee and the people of Naugatuck.
