f 's t\ ftepem on nozsemtí Well it took over a thousand years, but somebody came up with a unique idea. That is to get on horseback in the area from where the Hungarians came, and ride along the trail that ended in Hungary. It is an undertaking. We don't know much about the few horsemen All we know is that they are on their way and their journey will come together with the big celebration. It would be good to know if they are Hungarians or some other nationality. We wish them luck. ......AND THEY FLY, AND WE WATCH In the past weeks we saw Hungary move into the the limelight of international affairs. People were aware of the atrocities happening across the border in the former Yugoslavia. At one point Serb planes dropped some bombs on Hungarian territory. Also, the influx of refugees, many non Hungarians, put a strain on the country. Peace south of the border will help refugees go back to their original towns and villages. You could take under consideration that not everybody will leave Hungary. Now, there is a new turn in Hungary’s status. The peace keeping forces are coming to the country. They say that the American soldiers will be safe in Hungary and the logistics will be there. This is the plan but at this point we don’t know what the Hungarians will pay for this participation, and we don’t know to where this whole situation will develop. We learned that a previous military airport will serve as a landing strip and the upgraded barracks will accommodate the personnel. The village, Tarszár, where this airport is happens to be a few miles east of Kaposvár, a town of a fifty thousand population. The shortest distance to the southern border is only 30 miles. To Tuzla it is just a little over one hundred miles. In between there is Pecs on the slopes of the Mecsek mountain. It is loaded with historical buildings, university and churches. Also Siklós and Szigetvár, that were factors in stopping the Turks on their way to run down Europe. There are some important industries like Zsolnay, the world renowned ceramic factory, Komló with mines and Kovágószölós where they found nuclear material, not to mention the famous red wines of Villány. The Hungarians had their bad experiences with the area across the border. Don’t forget that the first World War started in Sarajevo and the Hungarians who were against it paid a sever price. She lost more of her population and land than what was left to make a crippled country. Hungary paid enough. Don’t forget the Tartars, the Turks and Trianon. Also the fact that that she was left to rot under Soviet occupation. Today we don’t see rectification or help that would indicate that Hungary is favored for all the good she has done for the world. It all depends on your experience. A few days ago I was sitting with Ferenc Vardai Vadu. We were talking about the place where both of us spent part of our youth years; we were talking about Kisvarda, a town in the north-eastern comer of Hungary. Ferenc was a native and I went to school there. We walked the same paths, knew the same people, went to the same movie and we left our marks there. Ferenc did more in this respect. He became a composer, song-writer and he ended up writing operettas. In 1947 the local cultural association produced his first operetta with resounding success. This was quite an Vera Jako and Ferenc Vardai Valu after a performance. accomplishment for a young man. Touched by this experience, Ferenc was ready to fly. So he did; not by an airplane but on train he went to Budapest. He was ready to conquer the capitol city. He fought for nine whole years, working during the day, enrolled in studies for the Hawaiian guitar and peddling through the evenings with his portfolio. He never considered giving up, but during these years his enthusiasm was channeled into a slower pace. This is why it took him two months to follow up on a song, “Balamber, the enchanted hunter”, that he left with László Kazal Finally, after two munths, meeting with Kazal was like reaping a great harvest, like entering a new world. The first thing Kazal said:”Where have you been? We have your song in tomorrow’s program.” After nine years this sounded unbelievable. The song was a success, others took it over and the doors that were shut, for almost a decade, all opened up. Unfortunately the political situation had Page 6
