AT THE SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE AND SPIRIT After taking a few unnecessary turns, I finally ended up at the Naugatuck Library. With my wife, Claudia, we first browsed around to have a first impression. It was Sunday afternoon. We became aware of people going in and out of the building. After a short time we also noticed that some people going in also came out. This gave me the conclusion that not everybody is there to attend my lecture. When I mentioned my observation to Claudia, who is an English teacher, she said that it is amazing that on a Sunday filled to capacity. Behind the back row people were standing. Then I found out that there are more people waiting in the lobby and there has to be an other performance, too. It was immediately clear that the library committee did a terrific job to raise such interest in a population where the number of Hungarians was hardly enough to be a sample. Mrs. Lengyel showed slides of Hungary. I talked about the origin and make up of the population. Also about the struggle and sacrifice the Hungarians made protecting western civüization and Christianity. Then the Hungária Folk Dance Ensemble from New Jersey entertained the audience. The event had to be repeated right after. This time the lecture was given by Erika Papp Faber. In the coming couple of weeks the library showed the film “Searching for Wordin Avenue”, then an event for the children on legends, songs and crafts. A slide presentation including Lake Balaton gave an idea of holiday customs and family leisure time. The dancing lessons were, naturally, about the csárdás. The events were rounded out by a reception that resembled the Hungarian style. It was a pleasure to see what Naugatuck was able to do. Thanks to all of them. Well this didn’t sound encouraging but it sure was nice. Inside we were very impressed. The building is beautiful, and the place is neat, orderly, and just welcoming. We met the director, Joan Lamb who showed us around. There was an impressive showing of Hungarian history. The library was able to obtain all the 16 panels of Al Bauer’s exhibit. Nicely spread around we saw the “life-line” of the Hungarian events, also beautiful embroidery and original artifacts. They purchased Hungarian books and videos. They have a better collection there than libraries in our Hungarian community. The auditorium, to my surprise, was PAGE 9 By Joseph F. Balogh
