FOUR DECADES OF FESTIVITIES CLOSE DOORS Every year on the first days of J une there had been an International Festival. The ethnic groups of our area get together organized by the International Institute of Connecticut and set up their food and culture booths. We Hungarians were always a part of the Festival. We cooked Kolbász, G ulyás, Pörkölt, Székely Káposzta, Paprikás Krumpli, Palascinta, and every time a big spread of delicious Hungarian pastry. We were at Pleasure Beach, Cardinal Shehan Center, Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University and recently at Captain's Cove. Our culture booth showed Hungarian peasant home, pottery, Herend porcelain, costumes, crafts, art, embroidery, workshops, etc. Among the entertainments we had the Fold-dance group from Norwalk, also from New Jersey. Hungarian music was played and color slides were shown. It was a great time for our volunteers and for all who stopped at our booths. We challenged other nationalities and we sampled each others food. The Festival was a good experience and a fine way to enjoy our multi-cultural community. With this the spirit of the Festival got lost and as of now there isn't a way to salvage it. It is sad. In the past weeks the International Institute had its 77 th annual dinner at The Cuban Lyceum. At the dinner the ethnic groups that used to participate in the Festival received a certificate of appreciation. On behalf of the Hungarian community the American Hungarian Heritage Association accepted the certificate. What we really want to say is that the appreciation should be to the International Institute and its executive director Myra Oliver. SPORTSPLUS CONNMCUTPCST Sunday, January 3C>. SCATT THE SCUDS There were many Mountain areas that were known as beautiful tourist places in Hungary, but during the past decades no one was allowed to go there. It was understandable that the famous Hungarian puszta was off limits because one could see the Soviet soldiers doing war games. Well anyhow, the secrets of the mountains were no secret after a while. Hungarians were not allowed into those places on Hungarian land because that was the place for the Soviet missiles, The infamous SCUDS. Ironically an American company just finished dissembling the last one and with this parts of the Hungarian land was given back to the Hungarians. page 6
