CELEBRATION OF 90 YEARS On November 6th the United Church of Christ on North Avenue in Bridgeport celebrated its 90th Anniversary. It was a heartwarming event, not just for the parishioners, but to all who participated. Months of planning and preparing brought a memorable fruit to this day. The morning worship service was highlighted by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz, Bishop of the Hungarian Calvin Synod, who in his sermon talked about the history of this church, the dedication of its pastors and the congregation strong in its faith. Assisting were Rev. Dr. Bela Poznan, Dean of the Eastern Classis, and Rev. Betsy Reed of the Council of Churches. Following the service the members of the congregation and the guests attended the banquet at Liedl’s in Stratford. Bishop Vitéz, Rev. Poznan and Rev. John Kidd addressed the celebrating guests. The Sunday School presented a special award to Leona Banakowski. She served over 25 years in connection with the school. Kevin Putzig, Sunday School student, presented the award. James Balias gave a condensed history on the church. Barbara Poruban read the congratulating letter from President clinton. Susan Virgulák brought greetings of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. Delegates of local churches and organizations greeted the guests. Cheers and applause welcomed the oldest church member, Mrs. Helen Csigái, 93 years old, who made special arrangements to be able to attend. Mayor Joseph Ganim greeted the banquet and with his wife, Jennifer, went up to every person at the tables. * * * * We wish to thank our church members and friends for making this day special in our church’s life, and history. We also thank Louis Sebestyen for being Master of Ceremonies, and also Lee Wakeman for her superb job as Chairman. Committee members not mentioned above, Sharon Green, Bette Kelemencky, Barbara Wendel, Carol Mastrangelo, Alexander Bognár and Andrew Pechena deserve our appreciation for the work and effort they made to bring this event to a memorable celebration.
