CHIEF ELDER CREDITS LADIES In the past we elaborated on the wonderful Hungarian activities many of the churches held in our area and justifiably so. It’s difficult to believe our First United “Hungarian” Church of Christ on Clinton Avenue in Bridgeport, CT, celebrated its 42nd Hungarian Festival. Once again we wish to thank those that attended our annual affair. It’s obvious people love to be with people and to communicate with one another in the language that was spoken and taught to us as we grew in that wonderful Hungarian atmosphere. Song sheets were handed out and dear Roszika played her violin while people sang with gusto the old but ever-lingering songs we remembered. The traditional Hungarian Chicken Paprikas, stuffed cabbage and kolbász by Drotos was outstanding, followed by the ladies’ great pastry, once again proven to be the “Pista Ristant” and an end to a fulfilling low calorie meal. Who are we kidding?? Once again our ever faithful ladies ran their popular noodle, cake, and embroidery booths, a project that many of them work on the entire year. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the men of the congregation, some that cook, some that do the “buggylugging”, some that sell tickets and those that count the money, that’s the job I liked best—all key people working together for the good of their church. On Saturday following our Festival, we had our traditional Hungarian dinner dance chaired by John Koi and Vinny Vida. As always, the music came from a band well known to our festivals. “Gypsy Joe” and his crazy “Mad Hatters.” If anyone can stir the adrenaline in an individual, it’s Gypsy Joe and his band. Well, here’s where I might get myself in trouble with my Christian brothers. If you recall, I started out by saying “Let’s give credit where credit is truly due.” Well, ladies, it’s your turn to shine. It’s my sincere belief as I worked and observed the ladies for the last 50 years, that you were and are truly the backbone and driving force for any activities we participated in. So to all you gals who work so diligently year after year for the betterment of your church, we men salute you. Believe me ladies, we couldn’t and wouldn’t have it any other way. There, I’ve said it, and I’m glad. God Bless all till the next time. Louis J.
