MAGYAR NEWS", 60 Tyrone Place Stratford, CT 06497. Mrs. Burke enjoys reading, music, sewing and needlework art. Beginning in 1980 up until the present she has been teaching Hungarian Peasant Embroidery at the First United Church of Christ, Clinton Ave., Bridgeport. Her work involves researching and developing embroidery designs for blouses, aprons, scarves, etc., cutting outof garments, assembling and sewing of them after the embroidery is completed. Herwork has been on di splay in the H ungarian B ooth during theOctoberFestival and at the Christmas Fair in December. 1 asked Jean, “which organization she supports most in her church,” and she replied, “I am a committee of one, serving all of our church organizations with art works as the need arises.” She has designed Hungarian Festival Covers since 1953 for the First United Church of Christ, and in addition she designed the covers of four of the six cookbooks published by the Ladies Guild the most recent one being the beautiful “Centennial Cookbook.” Also, in 1957 she designed the symbols for the stained glass windows when the new church was built. Besides lending her artistic talents, she has taught in the Sunday School, was a member of the Church Choir and a Sunday School Secretary. In the larger community, E. Jean Burke has lettered the “Book of Remembrance” for the First Church Congregational, Fairfield, and Greenfield Hill Congregational Church; also, two Charcoal and White Conte Pencil Drawings for the League of Women Voters Publication, “Focus on Fairfield.” Mrs. Burke’s favorite things to draw or paint are portraits of both people and animals. I have seen her portrait painting of former First Selectman John J. Sullivan of Fairfield and have come to appreciate her keen eye and visual concept. It is with thanks and deep gratitude that we pay tribute to E. Jean Burke, artistillustrator, wife, mother, church and community volunteer, who has brought in her quiet and humble manner so much joy and pleasure to countless people through her art. Page 2 M.
