Don't miss this performance, page 2 The Chinese may have their year of the lion, or serpent, or monkey, etc., but look out, 1996 will be the year of the csirke (chicken). The 1996 World Expo Hungary committee was looking for a symbol, a logo, a figure to create an image for the expo. So a contest was held and a Budapest jury was selected to oversee the effort. The president of this jury was ERNÖ RUBIK, the inventor of the sensational Magic Cube. The prize was 1,000,000 forints (about $9,300). A 44-year old Hungarian citizen living in Los Angeles by the name of ISTVÁN BÁNYAI won the contest. The Hungarian word for this caricature symbol is KABALA. The dictionary defines it as a mascot, a thing that brings luck. The luck started with BANYAI. But many Hungarians think the symbol should represent a stronger image. Not a bear (RUSSIA) or a lion (BRIT AIN) but how about the TURUL MADÁR (BIRD) a sort of eagle type of bird which exists in the Hungarian mythology. They say the strength of the TURUL flowed into the veins of the Magyar tribes. This time maybe the csirke (chicken) will capture the imagination of the day. It is simple and cute, and children will love it. It is time to get ready and it is not too early to make plans to take in the fair. Budapest is a beautiful city. Perhaps one of the most delightful ones to see in Europe or indeed the world. And there is the Balaton (not just a lake) and the historic cities and countryside of a land about to celebrate its 1100 years of existence. So there will be a full house, perhaps standing room only for the show. It’s time to plan a trip. Check up on your old friends or relatives. It’s the year to visit them—or to find a connection for rooms or even rent an apartment. There are many fine hotels, but the prediction is for a shortage of rooms and higher prices. Better talk to your travel agent to sort it all out. The Expo grounds will be south of the PETŐFI bridge on both sides of the DANUBE. On the Pest side, the land is being cleared and the fences and signs are up marking the site of EXPO ’96. This is near the HÉV station for trains to the suburbs. There was quite a debate about holding the fair. The first conception was a joint fair of two cities, VIENNA and BUDAPEST. But VIENNA cancelled out. Hungary is struggling with the hard task of reconstruction. But the Hungarians are celebrating eleven hundred years of statehood and are still standing their own ground. Let the world come and see where the Magyars live, at the crossroads of Europe, where they fought off the Mongols, the Turks, the Hapsburgs and the Russians and now once again live in freedom and liberty. So come to EXPO ’96 and have fun! Julius J. Varga Sun City West, AZ READ THIS AND DON’T DELAY Re-Opening of Claims for Hungarian Compensation. One month only!
