Magyar News Monthly Publication in Cooperation of the local Hungarian Churches & Organization ST. STEPHEN’S DAY, AUGUST 20 Stephen, son of Arpad was bom around 970 or 975. He became Duke of the Magyars in 997 and crowned First King of Hungary in 1001. He was the founder of the Hungarian State and mied till 1038. The Hungarian people honor him by celebrating August 20. In Budapest during the procession they carried St. Stephen’s holy right hand in a Gothic reliquary. St. Stephen’s last act was a prayer in which he placed his country under the protection of the Virgin Mary, who has been honored as the “Patroness of Hungary” (Patrona Hungáriáé) to this day. The altar painting that you see here depicts this act. This painting was in the former St. Stephen Church in the West End of Bridgeport. Now it is in the confessionary of St. Emery Church. It was painted in 1900 by Vincent Petrassy. Despite all our efforts to find out the history of this altar painting we were not successful. The Magyar News turns to its readers to obtain information on this Hungarian Art. Please call or write to us or get in touch with the pastors of St. Emery. Joseph F. Balogh
