Despite the unfavorable factors, the American Hungarian Heritage Association held its Scholarship Tea Party on the 27th of December at the Calvin Hall in Fairfield. At this time the students are home from school. The club room was filled to capacity with the scholarship recipients, the committee members and those who were just looking for a nice time for the afternoon. As they were coming in, they were treated with Hungarian music played by Rozsika. The program started with Joseph Stiber, president of A.H.H.A., welcoming the participants. After, Joseph Balogh recapped the history of the graduate scholarship program, and talked about Mary Katona. The scholarship was named in her memory and the A.H.H.A. makes an effort to give Financial help to students of Hungarian background in our area every year. This year four applicants were rewarded. Though, as Mr. Balogh said, many more should be awarded, also with more money, but it is up to our Hungarian community to take on a larger obligation to support the program. The program continued with the performance of Julia Fulop. In the last issue, the Magyar News printed an article on her. This time she sang “Oh, Holy Night.” The audience was amazed by the beauty of her voice and the skill that she has. The appreciation was well expressed by the applause they gave. Then Claudia Margitay-Balogh on behalf of the Scholarship Committee gave a very informative talk on the selection process. Linda Chehy, committee member was also there. Bette Johnson, chairman, and Joseph Rácz, member, were out of town for the Holidays. Claudia gave a biographical information on all four recipients, then introduced them one-by-one. There they received their well deserved checks from Joseph Stiber, president. The recipients were Peter Kömíves, New Haven Community College, Alison Beres, University of Connecticut, Éva Karsza, Sacred Heart University, and Attila Kömíves, University of Southern Connecticut. After the formal part of the program Justin Margitay-Balogh played Christmas songs on saxaphone with his mother at the piano. During the intermission there was a reception organized by Helen Szabó, with coffee and many Hungarian baked goods donated by the ladies. During this time Rozsika played some beautiful Hungarian music again. The intermission was followed by the singing of Hungarian and American Christmas carols and songs lead by Claudia playing the piano. The uplifting event was an inspiration to all who were there. They are ready to come to the next one. Sincere thanks also to the Calvin United Church of Christ for accommodating this event. Surprisingly A/fordable Stratford Athletic,Club 140 Watson Bvld.
