. I ON THE WINGS OF MUSIC, A YOUNG LADY CAPTURES OUR HEART The Regina Quick Center on the Fairfield University Campus is one of the finest settings for any stage performance you could imagine. All the time there is something going on to the joy of the audience. Recently, I attended the show that Fairfield Prep put on. It wasn’t the first show that I have seen which was put on by students of our area. It goes with the territory because my son Justin is friends with many of them. Now, that he goes to Prep, we the parents participate in the events put on by that school. When the curtain went up, I got my answer to how the play, Little Mary Sunshine, would be produced. I had imagined boys would play the roll of the girls, because Prep is an all-boy school. The Chinese do it so I wasn’t far out. In this case the boys were from the school, and the girls, from other schools auditioned for the female parts. I must say it was an excellent production directed by Susanne Scoville. As the show continued, I noticed the excellent performance of Little Mary Sunshine. I’m not exaggerating too much when I say that she could’ve been dropped off here from a Broadway stage. She commanded the stage at all times, and my, what a voice she had. Not only was she given a beautiful voice given by nature, but has been polished by training and study. It definitely alerted my full attention. Immediately I wanted to find out who this Little Mary was. I looked in the program and to my surprise and joy I read her name, Julia Marie Fulop, a name unmistakably Hungarian. During intermission in the audience I found Julia’s mother. I told her that this very talented young lady should be known by the Hungarian community. From her I found out a lot of things about Julia. In previous years she was seen in shows such as South Pacific, Pirates of Penzance, and Oklahoma. S he was on the stage of Fairfield High, Fairfield Teen Theater, Fairfield Community Theater and the Regina Quick Center. She studies voice with Walia Triolo and acting with Frances Kondziela. One would think that we are talking about an older young lady. Well that’s not how it is. Julia is 16 (sweet sixteen) and a student atFairfield High. She is also a good student. She is a product of this local community. Julia was bom in Bridgeport, and went to school here. She belongs to St. Emery’s Church. Taken by her hands at a very early age she received her introduction in to music by her mother’s side grandmother, Julia Kolaric, who emigrated from Slovania. I have more to say about this lovely young lady. Those who knew St. Steven’s Church in the West End remember Father Fulop. He was an uncle to Julia’s father, Frank. Also Frank’s cousin is Father Burke at the St. Ladislaus Church in Norwalk. As for plans in the near future, Julia will sing at the midnight mass at St. Emery’s Church. As Julia’s mother, Margaret said, you have to hear how Julia’s voice fills that church. AnotherChristmas appearance will be at the Hungarian Scholarship Tea Party on Sunday, December 27 at 3 p.m. at the Calvin Hall sponsored by the American Hungarian Heritage Association. We are all excited about hearing Julia sing. Joseph F. Balogh Julia Fulop in the role of Little Mary Sunshine HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our readers BOLDOG ÚJÉVET minden kedves olvasónknak Page 3
