TO ME IT WAS JUST A POEM One of the requirements for the Mary Katona Scholarship, given out by the American Hungarian Heritage Association, is an essay on an experience in the Hungarian community. This was written by one of our applicants. My parents emigrated from Hungary in 1971. When my brother and I were going to school, we learned two languages at once. At school we’d speak English and at home Hungarian would be utilized. It was important for my parents to keep the Hungarian tradition, and so my brother and I were sent to Hungarian language class. When I was three and a half years old, I was asked to recite a poem for the Hungarian festival. I couldn’t read that well so my parents had to repeat everything until I memorized it. Every night it was necessary for me to practice. Sooner than I thought, the “big” day had come for me to recite the poem. I was excited because my parents said if I did a good job they would give me something in return. Once I got on the stage I noticed the bright lights on me. Eventually H00HNG SHINGLES LEADERS JOHN BOGNÁR ROOFING & SIDING 73 Melrose Avenue Bridgeport. Before I knew it, the crowd started to clap. It amazed me to see the people cry. To me it was just a poem, but for the audience it reopened the wounds of the revolution that the people thought time had long since healed. After thirteen years of growing up in America, my parents thought it would benefit me to take a trip to Hungary. On my first trip to Hungary, I finally had a chance to meet with my grandparents and other relatives. I was in Hungary for two months and I experienced life in Kisvarda and Pécs. On my second trip to Hungary I visited close relatives and toured. I am proud of being brought up in a Hungarian community. My parents have helped me so much. They have illuminated the life which is lived in the homeland. And therefore I feel connected with all Hungarians. For this I am truly grateful.
